Who Uses Every Bit Of Their 1/2 Ton?

I’ve been starting to “use” my 09 1500 ext cab 5.3L Silverado more and more.

  • Will be towing a 24’ Pontoon work barge all over the state
  • Will be towing a tractor around the area and out of state every month or so. The tractor + trailer will pretty much max out the truck.
  • Putting lots of miles on it (up to 1500 miles/week at times)(On some rough roads sometimes too)

I’m thinking of beefing up the rear suspension because I also have a leveling kit installed so any amount of squat really shows! However, I know no matter how tough the suspension is, at the end of the day I still only have a 1/2 ton tranny that'd I'd really not want to rip out!

So I was wondering if others out there really put their ½ ton trucks to work, or if a 2500 (with diesel of course) would be a decent idea.

ill likely never tow anything that will come to the limits of the truck. at best a medium sized car on a trailer but for the most part a trail with 1-2 track bikes plus gear

Should be fine. Just watch the tyranny temp and let the gears work Angeles engine roar if need be. Stupid auto correct phone!!

My truck had 312 miles on it when I hooked up the cattle trailer for the first time. I had owned the truck about 12 hours and had only put about 15 miles on it myself. I have towed stuff all over and use it as intended...like a truck. It turned 1 year old over the weekend and has 21,000 miles on it already.

It's nice to read that some people do use a pickup as designed and not as a car.....For those of you that use a pickup as a car, well, I guess you can't complain when gas prices hit all time highs.

1/2 tons will handle alot more than most people think. I've used my half tons for stuff some people would buy a 1 ton for. :) Braking is usually the limiting factor when it comes to what a 1/2 ton is capable of.

I definitely use every bit of my 1/2 ton plus some, i haul a 32ft Zinger travel trailer with double slides that has a gross weight of 11,000lbs while I run 35`s with stock 373 gearing, I`ve hauled a couple loads of gravel that weighed in at 3500lbs approx. 60kms on the highway and I`ve towed my 52 6x6 Deuce and a Half around the yard with it. I added a extra spring ply in rear so she rides a bit high unloaded but nice and level with travel trailer on. I`m tempting fate but hopefully she`ll hold until I can afford my 3/4ton duramax.

my truck is only 3 weeks old so she hasn't worked too much yet, but many a time I have towed a 3500 lb trailer load of gravel or top soil behind my trusty caravan. If she could take it then I'm sure the pickup can take a beating.... There made to be abused....
