Greasy Fingerprints

Recommended Posts

I bought a used 2007 GMC and it is in great shape. 40k miles, paint looks good (or so I thought) and no dings. I looked the truck over really good before I bought it and didn't notice anything. I get it home and start to wash the truck and notice what look like greasy finger prints on the hood. It looks like someone chainged the oil and then touched the hood. But you can only see them at a certain angle. How can I get these out? I don't feel to comfortable about taking a buffer to my paint. Would regular waxing and/or clay bar take these out? I'll try to get a picture up soon.

Clay is used to remove bonded contaminants. After you wash your vehicle and feel your paint and it has a rough feeling to it rather then being smooth thats where the clay would come in. You could definitely try a clay bar with the lube then if that does not help the situation try using some Meguiars ScratchX with a foam pad and work that it real good over the area in question and check your results. It may take 2-4 applications since its a mild paint cleaner. Then follow up with your choice of wax..

EDIT: A pic would really help.....

Yea, I'm gonna try to get a pic up as soon as I can. I get home after practice and it's dark so a pic prolly won't come until tomorrow. But I know for a fact it's finger prints. I just don't know how they got there or what substance made them.

if it is just oily finger prints, than wash the area down good with a moderate amount of Dawn dish soap. it will take the oil off, and it will take the wax off also, so after cleaning the area needs to be re waxed.. i know people who use Dawn as a cleaner/wash prior to clay baring..

good luck

If it is oil, then you don't need Scratch X. Just use a good dish detergent and wax the truck afterward.

I have seen plenty of guys do more than they need and they get themselves into trouble especially with a diminishing abrasive like Scratch X.

Try Dawn and see if it works.
