in the g80 videos it shows the gmc trucks as being superior than all the others they listed on the same type of traction less surface, but now theyre saying a limited slip diff will out perform a true locking diff. from the looks of the one test the gmc was starting to get up the hill and they let off the gas.

All depends on how the test is being done. The G80 can be tricky to make lock up, it it does at all. The G80 in my '03 was garbage, so a properly functioning LSD would be better. Plus, the G80 video was either done by Eaton or GM, so of course they'll make their product look better. This (the first video) is supposed to be an independent test.

the g80 is a true locker. the bad part it only stays locked to 20 mph. if you do not service your g80 rear end it will not perform as designed. never put gear oil that has additives for a limited slip rear end. mobil 1 is a no no. you can buy gm oil for it or do like i did and use synthetic gear oil made for the riceburner cars manual transmissions. make sure you use synthetic oil without limited slip additives. oil has to changed at regular intervals for the mechanism to function properly. i know i never changed my oil since new and it stopped locking. cleaned and changed the oil and now it is working fine. after watching their video anybody from the old school knows all you have to do is put the parking brake on slightly which fools the differential into thinking it has equal traction and would allow every one of those trucks to go up their hill.

I've tested my G80 in places where i know for a FACT that a LS won't make it up.

Get one of those rear tires in the air and i guarantee none of those trucks will go anywhere.

It's all in the test.......

you know, that is such an obvious thing to do now that you mention it- but i never would have thought of it. i'll have to remember that one.

Newbie and researching a potential change of brand, but is the G80 the auto locking rear end I have seen on Silverado/Sierra 1500 window stickers? And is this the same design or maybe the same assembly that is in the 2500?

Thanks

would i be best off to go visit gm for the specific fluid for it? my truck is at about 64000 km now so id like to get it changed over for some new fluid, make sure she keeps working as ive noticed at times it wont lock up. i think the best test for that locker would have been the twist ditch test they did in the one video, see how well the lsd trucks can handle one wheel having absolutly no traction

Out of curiosity how old was the truck? Like I said, on mine the operation was unpredictable at best. They may work great when new but even when I got my truck with 32k on it that first winter (truck was purchased in November if memory serves) it didn't work well at all on my snowy driveway. But yes, I'd agree that when functioning and all else being equal, the G80 will get a truck out of places a LSD cannot.

And SVT- the G80 is the auto locking diff. GM uses RPO codes for every option on the vehicle and the G80 is the code for this differential. It is also called a Gov-Lok/Lock.

My truck does great locking up when it needs to and unlocking when not... You want it for traction starting off, but if you are allready going to fast it will not engage or it will become a diff bomb.

my only complaint about it is when i come into a clow speed corner and loose traction and it locks up on my and sends the ass into the oncoming traffic lane, other than that its not bad. but from the videos ive seen they dont engage right away, and the 100 rpm wheel speed difference must be more than just a little bit of traction loss. all in all its fdragged me out of quite a few slippery situations, except for this one driveway i turned around in and the bastard just wouldnt lock, tried it a few times and it wouldnt engage. so i think its time for a fluid change. you guys have a link for proper cleaning of this thing? id rather have my mechanic do it than pay double and have gm do it.

what are you using in yours? royal purple? and how much does it take? im almost due for an oil change so ill do this at the same time

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
