people can talk practice and muscle memory all they want, but if something bad happens, I want my pistol deployed right then, not after I push some catch and/or tilt the butt forward to release it. And if someone should make a grab for it, there's always plan B.

People talk about muscle memory because there is validity to it. If you train with your equipment then you won't have an issue when the time comes. I use a soft in-the-waist holster when I carry off-duty. I use this type of holster for comfort and concealment. But if I could somehow have a triple retention holster that I could wear comfortably and concealed, I would own it. Regardless, I still have to train drawing and firing that weapon because if I don't, I won't be very efficient at using it if the need arises. Muscle memory kind of goes hand in hand with the old saying, "Chance favors the prepared mind."

I have that same mod myself... Nice!

Mike- I respect your opinion... but why take that chance?

You never really know what people are thinking/capable of... situations can change in an instant. If someone gets the drop on you and goes for your gun, it's nice to have those extra few seconds while they struggle with your holster.

IMO, the levels are really about preventing someone from using your firearm against you (or bystanders).

In this case, for my vehicle, I chose a single-retention just to stop a curious passenger from pulling Glock without permission.

I just don't see it as an issue I guess. This time of year the pistol is under my jacket and you simply cannot tell I'm carrying. Even under just a t-shirt in the summer you'd be hard pressed to see it unless I did something like bend over where the shirt is stretched out some. I'm willing to sacrifice whatever security the LII or LIII holsters may offer for access- people can talk practice and muscle memory all they want, but if something bad happens, I want my pistol deployed right then, not after I push some catch and/or tilt the butt forward to release it. And in the end, with my interests/lifestyle or whatever you want to call it, I'm rarely someplace crowded where a stranger would get that close to me. As it is when I'm out in public I keep my head on a swivel as the first key to good personal defense is situational awareness. I'm confident that given the places I frequent, no one will get that close to me, unless I want them to be. As for in the vehicle- I don't have kids and anyone who rides with me knows better than to go digging through my console, where I usually keep it when I'm driving. And if someone should make a grab for it, there's always plan B.

Agree 100%. I use no retention holsters either. Mine are either IWB leather (High Noon is all I use) or OWB Paddle Holsters (winter time)--Fobus for Glocks, Galco leather for my Kobra Carry (shes too pretty to put in the Fobus). I believe in muscle memory, but I don't believe in retention holsters for CCW on my own person. Retention holsters for police, armed guards, military--absolutely, because they have a much higher threat of being in a struggle with a bad guy. You guys have to have situational awareness at all times. Personally, if I was in danger, I want to be able to pull from that holster without any problems. I practice drawing and shooting from my holster at my range all the time, plus I also shoot IPSC which is awesome for drawing from the holster, shooting & reloading on the move. I highly recommend anyone with a pistol to shoot IPSC or IDPA on a regular basis with your carry guns. Definitely makes you sharper on your skills and the more you do it, the better you become.

On a side note, buy the Magpul Art of the Tactical Handgun DVD set (go on amazon.com, they have them cheap on there). Some great drills and tactics on there for concealed carry.

Holster is still several days away, but Blackhawk stock/forend & Mossberg heat shield came in!

Good news: the BH SpecOps is friggin sweet!

Bad news: Dang Mossberg heat shield doesn't fit my breacher model! Ordered online so no returns! Didn't do enough research so that's $45 down the drain.. unless anyone here wants to take it off my hands? haha

You're better off without it. The barrel will never get that hot- your shoulder will be mush before the barrel reaches that point. Also, they scratch the hell out of the barrel because they don't stay tight. My Mossberg came with one, rattled loose the first two times I shot it, scratching the barrel. It's scrap metal now.

Very True. I use a Level 3 duty holster and can draw just as fast as our CID guys who carry a Level 2 Blackhawk. But you have to practice and establish that muscle memory to be able to achieve this.

As far as off duty the only way to go is complete concealment. If you walk around flaunting your weapon, when the shit hits the fan guess who the first target will be?? If the dirtbag can't tell that you have a weapon at first glance (or hard look) you have the crucial element of surprise. And retention is not such a big factor with concealed carry. A good stable friction holster will do the trick. I use a Cross Breed Super Tuck Deluxe Holster. It is comfortable, stable, quick, and most of all well concealed. It is by far the best concealment holster I have used. Nothing bad to say about it. And I have wasted A LOT of money trying to find a good holster. And just FYI I carry a full size Glock (22C) off duty. Check them out:

Here are a few videos showing how well they conceal:

You guys who carry all really use multi-retention holsters? I've carried 2 Sigs and now my Glock in open-top, friction retention (I don't know what else to call it) holsters for several years now without issue. I've never had the pistol even come partially out of the holster, even crawling around working on vehicles or being tackled to the ground by a friends kid (landing on the pistol sure hurt though!). I'm not worried about someone grabbing it because it's under a shirt or coat and even the few times I've open carried, almost no one notices.

We don't have open carry here in Florida but I use don hume holsters w/ open tops and have NEVER had a problem w/ retention so I have to agree with you.

It is a lot harder than people think to remove a gun from a properly made holster. It's not as easy as just yanking on the gun. My holsters all have 15 degree forward can't so someone from behind trying to rip it out would be more likely to just make me do a 180 than to actually get my gun from my holster. Situational awareness always comes into play when carrying.

Got the holster last night. Install has been frustrating... harder to figure exactly how/where/which angle than expected. I mounted the holster to a 'L' bracket from Lowe's designed for decks. Threw on a quick coat of black spray paint (should have sanded it first, but was in a hurry). For now, I used double sided tape to mount bracket to center console. Mainly because I didn't have time to pull my driver's seat out today & also b/c I'm not sure if I like the current position. When I find the sweet spot, I'll use screws to mount permanently.

I'll post a pic later of gun in holster... right now want to give the tape adhesive time to set.

Woke up to find gun & holster on my floormat. Double-sided tape not quite up the the challenge.. and today's 75 degree 100% humidity didn't help either. Will have to pull the driver's seat this weekend and mount with screws. Will post pics when finally finished (though not sure anyone's following this thread anymore).

Blackhawk's use three screws to mount holster to different type belt loops, etc.. Just tapped three matching holes in bracket. Also, blasted bracket tonight so paint will stick this time!
