Afm And Oil Consumption

My 2010 Sierra 5.3 burns oil like crazy. 2 quarts every 5000 miles. Of course, its been in limp mode many times in the last year due to the throttle position sensor issue. Im sure that hasnt helped the engine when it shuts down going 70 on the highway.

I own a 2007 Sierra with AFM. Although I only have 57K miles on it, I have never had an oil consumption issue whether I have changed the oil myself or by someone else.

If you have oil problems, go see your service manager. Stop complaining and have a friendly conversation. You'd be surprised how much help you can get if you ask for it. It worked for me.

 

on another note, I came to this forum because I heard some information that GM is recommending a new oil type or oil with new additives for AFM engines. I can't find anything here. Anyone know anything about this?

 

 

Yes. GM requires DEXOS oil now in all their engines. Basically, it is a synthetic blend of oils.

 

I, myself, have used Mobile 1 full sythetic in both my old '04 GMC 6.0L VHO, my '09 5.3L GMC crewcab, & in my current 2012 GMC Crewcab 5.3L. Mobile 1 is an "GM approved" oil- As of right now anyways. LOL!!

I have a 2007 nbs Sierra with the 5.3. I have 125k miles and I just finished up replacing all the lifters in my engine due to one being collapsed. got it back on the road and now it's three weeks later and I'm tearing back into the engine to dig into what sure seems to be another lifter issue on a different cylinder. (Yes I replaced all the lifters the first time I was I. The engine). The afm is somewhat of a problem on the 07-08 5.3 engines, wich is why gm put out a service bulletin on exactly what to do and what parts to add to the engine to correct the problem. I have been reading up on the afm motor for about a month now and everything that I have read indicates that the engines in the vehicles 2009 and newer should be fine.

Not sure where you got your information from but your assumption that "Dexos" is a synthetic blend of oils is incorrect.

 

"Dexos" is not an oil company brand at all. It's nothing other than a specification set by GM that oil companies must meet or exceed if they want to be acceptable for use in GM vehicles.

After meeting th GM dexos requirements, said oil company (Mobil,Pennzoil,Castrol,Valvoline,etc....) must pay GM a fee to have the Dexos logo on their oil containers. This allows the customer to know which oils they may use in their vehicles. Dexos-1 for gas engines, Dexos-2 for diesel.

 

It is not an oil brand, it's not a make of oil, it's not a mix of oil, it's a spec., that's it.

Technically correct. But the oil on the market that meets the Dexos1 spec is at minimum a synthetic blend, such as Pennzoil Gold. GM went to the Dexos1 spec in 2010 due to increasing warranty claims on complicated engines (VVT, AFM, AFM lifters, etc.) using cheap dino-oil.

GM's "Dexos" is a blend of both synthetic & reformulated/recycled convential oil. Their version of "going green"....

Just another way for them to make money - that's all. GM's in the car making business - not the oil business. They care about selling cars - not making them last forever ...
