Afm And Oil Consumption

Recommended Posts

I have an 09 5.3 with 43k and unfortunately have to join the high oil consumption club!

I had not been checking because I assumed it's not a factor when you change the oil every 5k miles.

I checked last week right before an oil change and it was a quart low! I will have to start monitoring it AND report it to the dealer (who doesn't ever think anything is ever wrong. "we couldn't duplicate that problem" is their standard answer!) because I drive my vehicles until the proverbial wheels fall off. My last vehicle was a 1997 Tahoe that had 255,000 miles on it when it was totaled out by a 4,000 door accident by my insurance company.

5.3 Iron Block / 2007 / about 50k on clock

Last oil change: (about 4000 mi since previous change) dipstick was still slightly over full mark just prior to taking it in and changing oil.

I am assuming from this that my oil consumption is slight, at best (a little is normal for any engine....not a quart per 60miles, but a little is always expected)

Will check again next time around.

AFM was disabled via custom tune probably 8000-9000 miles ago.

I have the IRON Block also and was told by a reliable source that the problem is the aluminum block. But I am still going to disable the AFM.

Trica, Could you please tell me if GM has solved this oil consumption problem in the last couple of years?

I thought the IRON block was the problem and not the aluminum block from some other thread posts. IDK... I have the LC9 code aluminum block. So far, and knocking on wood, I have no issues. I just got my autocal and as soon as I get my tunes from Justin, the AFM will be disabled. Hoping that might keep my from having a problem...

Joined the oil burner club also. 38,200 miles. Used a quart in 1,200 miles. Only seems to use oil on long trips. 2009 1500 Crew with the LC9 Alum block. Using 5w-30 mobil 1 oil. First trip to dealer and they said normal because I have 3,000 mile since last oil change. Does not burn a drop unless I do alot of highway driving. Not real happy about this!!! 5th GMC pickup and best of them all other than the oil burning.

Looks like your a new member... Welcome to the forum. How often do you change your oil? Do you do it yourself or take it to a shop? I'm confused... You say you burned 1 quart in 1200 miles but dealer said that's normal because you have 3000 miles on your oil? So you are saying you changed/or had your oil changed and for the 1st 1800 miles no oil was burned but then 1 quart was burned in the last 1200 miles (to equal 3000 miles) when you took it to the dealer? How ofter do you check your oil?

Posted

Exactly SouthCo. Changed my oil and did not burn a drop for the first 1,800 miles of around town driving. Checked the level before my vacation to Maine and it was full. Put on 1,200 miles on my vacation and when I checked it when I got home no oil showing on stick. Called my dealer who got me right in and after they checked the level and checked for leaks the truck took 1 quart to bring the level back to the full mark. I change my oil myself. 6 Quarts and GM filter. Grease the 2 fittings and re set the oil life monitor. I have been checking my oil more than I use to. Probably every 300 miles or so. Never had to check so much on any other Sierra I have had. Same thing happened in March when I went on a trip. 1,100 miles and 1 quart that time. Thought It was a fluke so I did not have dealer check it out. Added the oil and drove until last oil change. Did not use a drop until this last trip. Usually change my oil between 4,500-5,000 miles. been using Mobil 1 since about 5,000 miles. I did check my oil after I got to Maine and it was about a half quart low. No idea why it uses oil only after ALOT of highway driving. Thank you for the welcome to the forum!!!! Truck runs great and gets good gas mileage. 15.2 on average and about 19.2 if I keep it under 75 on the highway.BTW- the tech at the dealer was great!!!! I thought it was great that he came out and we nice talk about my problem. I worked at 2 different GM dealers for about 22 years of my life and at one time was a tech my self and then a Sales person who specialized in light duty truck sales.

Didn't use any oil around town because AFM wasn't going on and off..........Used it on the highway and it uses oil, AFM kicking in all the time. Seems to be the norm around the GM world.

will the dealer turn off the AFM if you ask them??? I hate to buy a computer and mess with the settings myself.

NO, they won't disable it for any reason. Only way to do it without a tuner is to go inside the engine. You won't be messing at all, just go to the menu, select "DOD" and turn it off.................problem solved.

I don't think turning off the "DOD" will solve anything.

I have a 2008 GMC 1500 with 5.3 AFM. At about 56k miles, Started having to add 2 quarts between oil changes at 5k mile intervals. After another 20K miles was burning a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Didn't matter if it was highway or backroads....every third tank of gas = 1 quart of oil. This past April at 93K miles, I got the dealer to "fix" it. ALL 8 cylinders had melted rings and burned pistons. Took a week to get back and it was covered under the powertrain warranty. This would have to be a $6k repair. If the oil problem was related to only the AFM, it would make sense only 4 of them would have been bad. Then, turning off the "DOD" would probably help before any oil consumption problems developed.

If you have oil problems, go see your service manager. Stop complaining and have a friendly conversation. You'd be surprised how much help you can get if you ask for it. It worked for me.

on another note, I came to this forum because I heard some information that GM is recommending a new oil type or oil with new additives for AFM engines. I can't find anything here. Anyone know anything about this?

    • I have ordered the car link adapter and registered for the google dev, will need to finish verification process later this evening when I get ahold of our kiddos android tablet. I will be using windows vs mac so hopefully it goes smoothly. I have zero tech background but I feel I can manage this with your write up.    Do you think it will be different for me? My truck is a 2023 GMC 1500, I have looked heavily into the AI boxes but I consistently find common complaints with lag.    Does carplay auto open now that you have it set up when you get in truck and turn it on? Or do you have to do open the app everytime?
    • I figured you would know about it.
    • It added a cost layer to an already limited production supply. True that.
    • Swap costs and supply/demand balance. When a barrel comes out of the ground the entire range of products are present but not all at the same percentage.    Breakdown of Refined Products The following table summarizes the approximate output from a standard 42-gallon barrel of crude oil: Product Type Gallons per Barrel Percentage of Total Gasoline 20 gallons 45% Diesel Fuel 9 gallons 21% Other Products 13 gallons 31%   Most of that diesel figure is 'straight run' or cut from the barrel. Gasoline 'cut from the barrel runs 0 to 20% at the crude. So in the crude unit there is more diesel the gasoline, usually.  The full refining experience however gives the tabled values. Ego there is half the diesel than gasoline after the 'first crack' That could be an FCC unit, or Isomax or....   Those units take heavy products and break the big ones into little ones. Those numbers are harder to get hold of but directionally it ends up the same.    Really light products are very profitable. Ethylene and Propylene to name two. Those are cracked from slightly heavier feeds like NG and Propane and Ethane. The cracker harshness determines the feed for distillation. Those feeds come from less profitable products like diesel and gasoline.    So...there is a swap cost. How much market is there TODAY and what crude am I running TODAY..... what is my process capable of always.    There is this as well. The USA uses allot more gasoline than it does diesel so in the cracker the process is tilted to gasoline production which....limits supply of diesel. OTR uses the most and it has different requirements than automotive and agricultural.  Limiting auto products.    You are correct however. It is less refined, just less of it. Allot less.
