Hey everyone!

Well, it's time to do my first oil change since I've purchased the truck. No, I'm not a noob, lol. I also own a 425 whp Honda Prelude turbocharged 2.2l that I've built, but I've always been sure to use correct oil and seeing I've never owned a GM truck before, so what do you guys suggest for a 5.3L Vortec for oil and filter?

Thanks!

Personal choice has always been synthetic 5w-30 and AcDelco filter. It's always served me without fail. I've used Mobil 1 for years but last 3 oil changes have been the Castrol edge synthetic since it "claims" 5x protection over Mobil one. Not sure I can agree or disagree with that claim, but so far so good. :(

I'll continue to use AC filters as I have on all previous GM trucks UNLESS the PF48 is changed to the ecore design. Some of the AC Filters like the PF46 I saw have a nylon (plastic) rather than metal retainer inside the filter to secure the filter media. I looked at a PF48 the other day at Wally World and it still had the metal core. I hope it stays that way. Otherwise I've run Purolator Pure One Filters or Wix Filters. (NAPA gold is the same as WIX)

As far as oil is concerned you'll find many/most people are as brand loyal when it comes to oil as they are when it comes to trucks. One thing to keep in mind is that GM has the Dexos 1 requirement for 2011 vehicles. I know your sig says you have an 05. My previous experience with the 5.3 was with Mobil 1 and I was happy. I've recently been running Pennzoil Platinum in my wife's last two cars and it is all good as well. Both Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum meet the Dexos requirement, so I'll probably go with one of them. I have a few miles to decide.

Here's a link to more info on the new ecore design I mentioned above.

Good luck with the oil change.

I use Pennzoil dino oil and the AC Delco filter PF48. Thinking of switching to Pennzoil Platinum synthetic and if I do that I'll use Mobil 1 oil filters. I've read that Purolator PureOne oil filters are too restrictive.

When you change the oil, be sure to have something ready to catch the oil as it really shoots out sideways from the oil pan, almost hitting the passenger side tire. Also, you'll probably need an end-cap style oil filter wrench to get the oil filter off and on, as it is REALLY close to the oil pan, which surrounds it on 3 sides. And even though your owner's manual says 6.0 quarts of oil, if you just glug in that much, it'll be over full on the dipstick--Somewhere around 5.7 quarts will put it to the full mark on the oil dipstick.

There are only 2 grease zerks on the outer tie rod ends. All other lube points are 'factory sealed'.

Finally, if you check your air cleaner, there are 4 bolts, you'll need a T25 torx bit driver to take them out. Be careful not to drop them when removing them; Murphy's Law says they'll never hit your driveway.

Good luck and happy maintaining! :(

That blue oil filter is going to be a PITA to remove. Aside from that.

Pennzoil platinum

Wix/Pure One/A/C Delco filter

And sure make your to grease the zerks

For those of us who OEM filter is the PF48 I thought the following link might be of interest. It compares the construction of the AC, Purolator, (regular white can) and Wix filters for our application. Cut open and peak inside the can.

All good advice. :)

There is also AMSOIL's OE oil that meets dexos 1 specifications and runs $5.50qt. No it is not on the GM dexos list. Just wanted to make sure that was posted as well. But it does meet the dexos spec's and is API certified.

Nice to see a few guys going with the Mobil 1 syn and AC delco filters, its what I use.

I used to use NAPA gold filters but they are $1.00 more expensive than the delcos from the dealer.

Confirms what I already know. Sure the Wix/Napa filter is a few bucks more, but with oil changes going from every 3K to 7K (OLM) I'm more inclined to spend the extra money on a filter with quality parts.

Mobil 1 5W-30 meets the GM requirements for the 2011 model years?
