ElFrancis Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Hi all, I have looked on the forum and found nothing so here are my question. I want to put 20% tint on my truck, can I do it myself? Do I buy pre-cut tint on ebay or just a roll and cut it myslef? Is there a quality in window tint? Which company is the best? Thanks
Wingnut Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Tinting windows is one of those things that you can either do, or you bork it up royally every time. I've tried it half a dozen times, and I've made a complete mess of it each time. I even went so far as to take the window out of the truck and lay it on the bench once. STILL screwed it up. I'd pay somebody. But that's just me.
K1500Tech Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Pay a professional to do it you will thank me later. I tried to tint my own windows but all I got was a thinner pocket book and a good excuse to drink beer.
temmert1 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I do have to agree with the other 2 guys. Window tinting is not easy and takes alot of practice and patience. My neighbor is really good at it. He put 20 on my back window and 35 on front doors. I bought precut off ebay for my sons car and he tried it himself. Needless to say my neighbor had to fix it.........But if you get good at it you can make alot of money....I do know he uses baby shampoo
KMGZ400 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 i cannot tint windows. i have tried and failed miserably. no one i know can tint windows either, i dont think its humanly possible to tint your windows succsesfully from one of those tinting kits you buy. i wonder how the pros do it so good
DALE#3 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Like every one stated. It's not easy.I bought a precut kit i'm going to try it probably end up smashing the glass. If it's worth the chance of saviing or throwing $30 away go for it.
KMGZ400 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 tinting is just so goddamn expensive. ive been to 4 places and cheapest one is 230 for whatever limo tint is on all windows except windsheid.

That is highway robbery. I got the front 2 windows to match the rear and the visor across the windshield for $70. professional job.

I hope they use lube on whoever gets their windows tinted at these places...I got my '10 crew cab Sierra tinted right after I got it last May, and it was $125 for all windows (minus windshield), as dark as legally possible here in Alabama, for $125.
[email protected] Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I did it on both my thirdgen and my pickup, but I don't know if I'll do it again, it's just tedious and it's worth the fifty dollars the local shop wants to do two front windows to me.
temmert1 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Its is very tedious and time consuming. And to do it right you should remove door panels. It reminds me of doing dry wall. Once you learn how and figure out all the tricks its not that bad
tyhuck Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Just pay someone to do it. I dont usually condone paying for something you can do yourself, but you are likely to pay more to do it yourself. Ive tried several times on several of my former trucks, and always ended up at the tint shop anyway. It can be done, but odds are, you will need either several pre-cut kits, or several rolls of tint, and you still may not be happy with the results. Its a good skill to learn if you have the patience and the room to work. If you do try it yourself, you will need a large, flat, clean work area to lay the tint out on. You will also need to be indoors to cut the possibilities of the tint being stuck somewhere you dont want it because of the wind blowing it. These are just a few things Ive experienced trying it myself. I love doing things myself. Im pretty handy with tools and am better than fair at fabrication. I have to be, Im a shop teacher. But, its just my opinion that window tint is one of those products best installed by a pro. Its kinda like building furniture. You can do it yourself, but by the time you get it right, youve spent the money to buy the good stuff. tinting is just so goddamn expensive. ive been to 4 places and cheapest one is 230 for whatever limo tint is on all windows except windsheid. Thats what I was quoted at my local shop too, with a lifetime warranty on the film and the guys workmanship. Basically he will replace it for free unless I damage it somehow.
jdubya Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I did mine myself, it was really easy considering that I took the door apart and removed the window to do it. If you are not comfortable taking the door apart I would just pay someone to do it. Trying to cut the tint while it is on the window is a pain in the a.....
KMGZ400 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 damn... the only places i can find to do it are little punk ricer shops... are there any like big auto stores that do it?>
cracked_up Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Cost me $100 for two fronts and the windshield visor. Had a speck in the right door so they did it twice. I think you get better quality material from the pro's then the do it yourself kits. I watched them do it, it is not hard when you have the right set up and equipment. My last truck was done for 9 years, same tint, and it's still on
