Drove A Cummins

I couldnt imagine paying $70K for any truck, I dont care what it is and what it has. That is Porsche 911 territory, like very nice shape and low mileage Porsche 911. Saying that, I love the Cummins I6, its just too bad they wrapped it in a Dodge, I hate the interiors on Dodges, look and feel like a cheap economy car from the 1980s. I tried my buddies 06 Duramax and that truck rocked, my next truck is definetly going to be a Duramax......but I still think a GMT800 with an allison and a cummins would be the ultimate pick up truck. You should be able to take a duramax for a drive man, just ask, tell them youre having cold feet about buying a truck that is too small for your needs.

I just traded in a 2005 dodge 3500 cummins 6 speed with a few bolt ons for my NBS GMC 1500.

first off, i find that no diesel out there can do what the cummins does. unbelievable reliability, insane power gains from simple mods (programmer, exhaust = 950+/- FT-lbs)!!

the engine it self has about one third the moving parts of a gm or a ford

the bad is that the Dodge truck around the engine gave me some headaches.

id still be driving her today if it wasnt a 6-speed and lifted. (wife cant drive stick and have kids ont eh way

The old interiors were pretty crappy, but the new body style interior looks great:

dodges are seriously such pieces of shit.. Ive owned rams with low mileage and if i told you the laundry list of shit wrong with it you would think i was lying.

The motor is hands down the best, but the rest of the truck blows.

just after i finished replying to this post i seen a preview for the new TOP GEAR on sunday. The guys are all gettin a new diesel dually from each maker and seeing which is toughest. Ford, Chevy, Dodge.

Shows tanner pulling a locomotive, them all drag racing, and im sure a lot more. That will be interesting.

Dont waste the salesman's time just to go hotrod a brand new truck...... I am sure you would like driving the GM truck as well. They are very nice. I work at a GM dealer and have driven them quite a bit.

I wouldnt drive a diesel unless I had something real heavy to tow though, they just dont pencil out unless you are pulling 10K plus on a regular basis..... Your dad will be happy with his 1500 I am sure and the 05 should suit you fine.

There is no reason to go buy a Cummins when a D-Max can get the job done better and already has a proven track record. The Allison and D-Max combo makes it the best and has been the best since 2001. The latest test between the big three proves that. Even with Ford having more HP and Torque, the D-Max got the job done better and received higher praise over the Cummins and Strokeless Ford.

I had my own reasons like, I could not find a long box in a GM when I bought because they were broke and not building any more. Luckily found a white Ram Diesel long box on the lot. Plus I had another ~10,000 or so other reasons to take the proven Cummins. Those reasons show in my payment also.

The sheet metal on the Ram kinda sucks though. It dents and bows in rather easy. The GM interior and ride is superior also, IMO.

Reasons to buy a diesel?

Milage. My 01 cummins (stock) got 24 mpg on 35's. my 2011 sierra on 33's gets 15.

Resale value bought my cummins with 270,000km for 12 grand. Sold with 320,000km for 12 grand.

Aftermarket support. Most newer diesels can add 100+ hp for under 500 bucks. try to add 100 horsepower to a gas engine? For my new truck, the only way i can see to add 100 horsepower is a suppercharger, which costs $5000+install.

Not to mention fun factor... PRICELESS

Who buys a 3/4 or 1 ton for the ride quality!?

cummins is a high milage, well designed engine. SO IS THE DURAMAX. Both engines pull very nicely. Both trucks do the job. It all comes down to personal preference.

PS dodges hold value pretty good...

Cummins has a track record... they've been putting engines into semis and heavy equip since who knows when... There's even an old Cummins diesel Indy car at the museum at Indianapolis. They've been around for a little while. I don't get into the Duramax vs. Cummins rivalry much, I'm happy as long as it's not a Stroker. We've been happy with all our Dodges, and I loved the 01 Duramax. Bad thing about diesels is when they do happen to need engine work, it costs an arm and a leg.

don't get me wrong cummins builds a stout motor...but ford and GM are ahead of the curve on building their own diesels...i've driven an lb7 duramax(amazing) and a 7.3 powerstoke(complete dog with a load behind it)

Could be case by case, I've been in a stock 7.3 ex cab long box auto 4x4 on 33's pulling a 48 foot gooseneck enclosed car hauler, full of aluminum, 3 dirt bikes, a big welder, a generator, a 4x4 atv, and a 1949 dodge pickup, and it passed highway trucks @ 65 up a hill...

the tranny overheated after about 5 hours, but lots of the trip was on gravel...

I test drove a 95 7.3 and like the engine, just didn't like the truck. (it was beat up)

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
