Sticky Steering Wheel Buttons

I have some sticky buttons on my steering wheel, and was wondering if there is fix for that. I guess I could replace the buttons since some of the lights re out, but if I can get them un-stuck for free, Ide rather do that for now.

You may need a new steering wheel. I have a brand new one, leather wrapped in pewter color. I bought it for my truck to replace the one without the buttons. Unfortunately, I also need the clockspring, which GM has shamelessly priced at over $ 400. It was only about $ 180 several years ago. So it does not look like I will be doing the mod. Besides, GM is reluctant to reveal the programming codes.

 

I will sell the steering wheel for $ 120 plus $10 shipping if anybody is interested.

No drinking soda and holding the wheel with the same hand. Probably going to need a new steering wheel.

I had this problem years ago with a pathfinder, a friend had a little steam cleaning machine that shot steam out of a nozzle and I used that and it worked perfectly and getting rid of the debris inside.

I was going to tackle this too with come electric contact cleaner I had bought for another project. It's sort of like brake cleaner, only for electical parts... My lights are out too, from what I found at GMParts, they really are not too expensive for the modules. Do they just pry out, I was thinking of removing them prior to shooting them down.

My radio preset button seems to stick sometimes if the truck sets over night. I have been wanting to fix it some how. Hope one of you guys come up with a good solution to this one.

WD-40 worked for me once on my 04. Had a sticky button on my TV remote also sprayed some WD-40 in the buttons and took care of it.

You did not mention what got onto the buttons.My wife spilled some tea that had HONEY in it all over the dash in her Audi.ALL the buttons were sticking after that.The dealership did try spraying contact cleaner on the sticking buttons.To no avail.We ended up making an insurance claim to cover the $3300 in replacement parts.Bummer...

I have not spilled anything on the wheel. But, the truck was purchased used in Dec '10. I dont think anything was spilled on them since the buttons right next to the sticky ones are working fine. I think its just from lack of use.

 

Do I really need to replace the entire wheel? Cant you replace the buttons?

Yes you can buy just the buttons

The web site for the steering wheel switches is great. I can't tell, however, from their description whether the switches include the back lights. Does anyone know if they do?

If you have decided to spend the money on new buttons why not try pouring a little boiling water on the old ones, not a lot just a bit, might fix the problem and if it does nothing you are buying new ones anyway. I mean mixing water and electronics is never the best idea but most things can handle some water.

The key to mixing electronics and water is to hold off on the application of any electicity until everything is dry again....

You need to stop doing that in your truck or you'll go blind. Have you tried a really soapy rag? Get the buttons really soapy (with the truck off, no keys doors closed, dome lights off). Let it sit for a minute or two, then wipe down with a clean cloth. Repeat as necessary.
