Putting a new layer of clear on likely wont solve your problem. You should consider a good detail and have a pro polish it with a cutting pad which will get rid of swirls and hazing on the clear, this might restore your paint to where you would be happy with it.

i do professional details on the side. i'm going to buff the truck and give it a coat of paint sealant and then a coat of wax tomorrow to see how it turns out. if i still do not like how it looks, can someone give me a rough estimate at what i'm looking at ponying up for a new layer or clear coat? thank you.

If you do professional details on the side you should know much it costs imo, you are looking at $2000 to have you current clear sanded and resprayed

You should stay away from the idea of the re spray unless you plan on stripping the whole truck down and making sure you sand every single edge really well so the new clear doesn't start peeling up in a year or less.

I agree with the price atleast 2000 and maybe more if you don't do any of the prep work yourself.

so because i clean cars i should know how much it cost to paint them?

I think he was stating that someone who is a professional detailer that uses a fast cutting rotary tool with cutting pads and compounds will know a lot about paint. Like how to tell if the paint is hard or soft, how to restore paint to better than new condition and what steps to take to restore paint.

Most likely your paint is hazy and needs to be compounded then polished then protected. If you needed a new clear coat it would be because your base coat is showing on the pads. In which case you would need a new paint job not just a clear.

.........then you should not have any issues removing the haze and swirls. Truck should look like new when your finished. No need to have it repainted, bad idea to just have clear coat done IMO.

I guess that did kinda sound like a smartass but all I meant was that doing details I figured you would know how much a clear job cost in case you screwed a car up and had to pay for a respray.
