Relearn Tpms Question Charge

Took my truck in for my first oil change and tire rotation. The first oil change was free to my suprise so i only had to pay for the tire rotation. The tire rotation was $19.95 and he said there was a $14.95 "RELEARN TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEM" charge. Does this sound right? He said they have to relearn the sensors cause it will mess up the DIC due to the front tires going to the back and so forth.

Anyway i said ok and when they finished i left and looked on the DIC and the front tires were reading 70psi and the rears were 60psi. I took it back and asked him i thought they relearned the sensors. He said they did they just forgot to change the tire pressure.

Did i get took on this extra charge? My last truck a Tundra had the tpms and never had to pay extra for rotation.

 

On a side note i checked the torque settings on my 18'' forged wheels and torqued them to 140ft-lbs. Is that the right torque setting? I also got them to install the rear fender liners.

It takes 2 min to do the re-learn. Sounds like a scam to me.

 

140 sounds right at least on the 6 lug trucks.

I think any amount charged for the TPMS is too much because it's something you can do yourself. It's in the owner's manual. Sounds like it wasn't a free oil change after all; they just gave it a different name on the bill.

 

Also, I just had a free tire rotation done on my truck because I told the guy I have 3 vehicles and would give him all of my business if he didn't nickel and dime me to death and not try to up-sell me.

 

If you go to that dealer again, I would suggest you be very specific about what you want done and an itemization about what it's going to cost, as well as be notified about anything above that before the work is done.

Yes this was at the dealer I bought my truck from. I guess I should have looked at the manual first. I will do this when I get home. Just didn't think about it as I got off work early and swung by there for the service since I had time. I have a friend that's a master mechanic there and he used to do all my maintenance on my 99 chevy. He was off yesterday so I'll talk to him about it later. Thanks for the replies. I thought this was a BS charge.

I always got my dealer to do it for free but it was the hassle of going in there and wait for them to do it. Usually they sent the new guys to do it and it take them like 3 trys to make it work. A member on here shoulded me a link to a relearning tool and I bought it and that was the best money I spent. It only takes me 30 seconds to relearn my sensors. The tool only cost me $80 and can do alot of makes and models, not just GM.

I got around to reading the manual and it looks like they would have a simplier way to relearn the sensors, like pushing a button under the dash or something. Seems like GM made it more of a hassle than it should be. Anyways i will do this myself next go around if i cant talk them into doing it for free. Seems to me that should be included in the $19.99 price of the rotation. I know they have a special scan tool that will only take them a second to do.

going to the garage on tues to have the tire pressures reset in the computer to 50 on all 4 so no more of this resetting crap having to run that much air in the rear tires for regular driving let alone in the winter on ice is bs

I hate to say that you got taken by your dealer but, that is what it sounds like. I got my tires rotated on my last oil change and the TPMS reset was included in the price. Took the guy about 2 minutes tops to go around with the tool on all 4 wheels.

I have a tool as well and it takes me less than a minute to do. I also don't pay for tire rotations. I do them myself twice every year when I change over the winter/summer wheels at a firends garage. Even $19.95 for a rotation is pretty steep in my opinion. I just buy my friend coffee and he helps me do it.

My local Goodyear shop wanted $15 to do her Impala relearn. I asked why he charged so much. He said it was because the equipment was so expensive to buy. (I didn't ask if he used the $40 Tirerack tool or what. ) I said I wasn't interested and he said he'd take a couple dollars off. I told him to go pound sand

My 08 is no problem to re-learn, but my friends 07 will not work. He has to take it to the dealer.

I hope you don't forget to bump those tire pressures back up when you hook on some huge, loaded trailer then have a blow out, nearly kill yourself and then try and sue GM and whomever does the change for you. Just sayin...

i dont pull many heavy trailers or haul heavy loads its the everyday driving at that psi thats the bs part i under stand gm is covering thier a$$ with this system and they or the tec that lowers this or inflates the tires someone could probably find a lawyer to sue for big $$ in the event of a wreck i personaly have no respect for people who do this kind of thing a warning for a low tire is a good idea just a little comon sense on the settings for the rears on the hd trucks is all im talking about .... rant over sorry for getting off topic.
