Identifying An Engine

Hi, I am trying to find out how to identify what engine I have in my truck. I bought it used and know it has been rebuilt, but how do I know if the engine that is currently in there is the original engine? Are there any identifying marks somewhere on it? It was originally a 5.7L, but who knows now.

 

I also am wondering about the transmission too because it was replaced too. Is there somewhere on the transmission that gives me a clue to what I have?

quick and dirty answers here:

assuming it's a V8, it will be either a 305 or a 350, here's how to tell:

if the transmission is an automatic it will be a 700r4/ 4l60 (note: no "e" in that year) the 700r4 and 4L60 are virtually the same transmission, just a few minor updates that I believe are all backwards compatible.

Thanks NickV, I really do appreciate it. I have always owned new cars and never had a chance to work on cars, that is until I got tired of making car payments. Now I have my hands full trying to figure a lot of stuff out. Anyway, thanks again.

1993 was the first year for the 4L60E in full size pickups.
