Subaro Baja...

There was a new Subaru Baja on display at the mall tonight and it's the first chance I had to look at one close up.  Basically an AWD car with a bed but it's nice looking.  Seemed to be well built-the bed is made of some plastic or composite material.

The bed is tiny but has enough room for town and city use.  I think it was sticker priced around $24000 with AWD and a 4-cyl.  I kind of liked it but it's I'd never have any use for it unless I could keep my fullsize and just use it to run errands and drive it to work.  I think it would be a nice vehicle for a college student or a suburban homeowner who needed a light small pickup for mving appliances or furniture etc.  No way a fullsize atv would fit in it, even with the taulgate down.

Anybody else looked at it yet?

It is actually a nice little niche vehicle.  Like CMNT said, it is basically today's Brat.  Crew cab Brat? :puke: A full size ATV would not fit in the bed. Will the suspension be able to handle that much weight?  If you only did very light hauling and lived in a big city, that woud probably be the perfect vehicle.

I like the looks, and the concept behind it, but 2 things that HillHound said do not go together.

town and city use

AWD

That, my friends, is an oxymoron. :puke:

Do  I get Paul Hogan's autograph if I buy one? :puke:

Average ATV weighs about 650lbs (except for some lard#ssed Polaris ATVs) and the cargo rating on the Baja is 1050lbs so it should be able to handle it.  It's also rated to tow 2500lbs.

You've got to bear in mind general, AWD is a feature for city use.  It's for the best traction possible.  People don't use AWD for off-roading because it lacks the control of shift on the fly 4wd system.

And my $.02  I thought it was pretty ugly looking, but then again, subaru's aren't the prettiest vehicles ever made.

I think it is an intersesting look.  Not pretty but not ugly.  Typical Subaru.  I think it is a good thing that they didn't call it a Brat.  When I hear Brat I think My Uncles old one and all the problems it had.  I think old and rusty.  not dependible.  Oh well.  I can't wait to see them on the road.  They are perfect for the younger people like me.  Can throw what ever gear you use in the back.  Like I could put my Bike/Roller Blades/Snowboard/ band equipment in the back.

I like it.  Not in the market for one, but can see that there should be a market.  Kinda like an Avalanche took advantage of a Toyota truck, and the offspring came out not quite Chevy, not quite Toyota.

My grandmother has an outback station wagon and if you would make a bed out of the station wagon part it looks just like the baja. Based on her car which is bound to be very similar because they look so much alike, I would not have one. There is absolutely no room for tall people and I think the ride is way too harsh for an AWD car.
