Dealer Made Me Pay For Slip Yoke Grease '08 Silverado

I took my 2008 silverado w/ 60K miles in for two reasons; 1) the right rear axle seal was leaking, which destroyed the brake shoe. 2) the infamous driveshaft yoke "clunk".

When I dropped it off the service writer stated that she wasn't sure if the yoke issue was covered under the powertrain warranty but she would check and advise before repairs. After 3 days in a rental vehicle, I went to get the truck and they had charged me $50 to grease the yoke, despite my protests and insistence that it is a warranty issue. They did replace the axle seal, but failed to do anything with the destroyed shoe (obvious result of being wet with grease).

The service writer told me quote: "it was a labor only fix, no parts so not covered". The service manager told me "it is a grey area in the warranty". I told them both that was the last time I would be in their service bay except to resolve this dispute and they both shrugged their shoulders. I was polite and respectful, I just wanted an answer as to why everybody else in the country gets their clunk fixed and sometimes even a new nickel plated yoke but I get to pay. They lied by blaming it on their warranty rep...should I really believe after writing probably 1/day of these that they haven't already made the decision to screw everybody on it?

I'm not pissed about the $50, or even that they chose not to cover it, I'm pissed about being lied to. I'm also pissed the bad seal ruined my brakes and they chose not to replace the shoes with no explanation. I would have conceded on that but they didn't even attempt to justify sending me out with failing brakes. Had my engine blown and thrown a rod through the hood would I not get a new hood? Had they said "We choose not to warranty that clunk issue" I would have probably considered paying them to do it, as my time is valuable.

So now I know how this dealership operates unfortunately. Has anyone else been denied the yoke clunk / slip shaft grease under warranty?

I'd be pissed too...for $50 of grease, I could grease the whole truck several times over !!!

I never actually made an appointment to do it because it doesn't bother me but:

I asked about having my clunk fixed, they knew what I was talking about, I was told by the dealer it was covered under the power train warranty, you got ripped off, call GM customer service and report this dealer, tell them exactly how they lied to you. Tell them about their shotty warranty repair on the seal and how they wouldn't fix the other parts ruined by the failure.

I find the dealers that don't have you paying for every little service at their over-priced shops act like this. Yeah cause I don't drop thousands of dollars in under-par service you give me a hard time on warranty claims? Maybe its just the area I'm in, but most dealers around here are like that.

Funny they will search for things that have been changed that would void warranty but if something under warranty breaks and wrecks other parts they wouldn't fix it?

I would be livid

I think a call to a GM service rep would be in order for at least the brake pads  Also, before any charges were made, they should have made a call to inform you before performing the work :D

I'm e-mailing the service manager (who asked for my name and was going to "look into it")...yeah right and copying their customer relationship manager. I suspect they'll either not answer, give me some bs explanation or make an attempt to repair the relationship. Either of the first two responses will send me to a GM rep. I also e-mailed a friend (20 year GM service manager) and I'm curious to see what he says. Friday I'm golfing/partying/crashing with two good friends who own a large GM dealership, I'll get their take on it too.

Thanks for re-assuring me that I'm not being a jerk...have to wonder if it's worth a stink about $45...but what would it be next time, a blown engine they fail to cover? Here's the e-mail I sent:

Dear ____,

I brought my 2008 silverado to your department last week for two reasons; 1) the passenger rear axle seal was leaking, which had destroyed the brake shoe. 2) the common GMT900 driveshaft slip yoke "clunk" addressed in TSB #09-04-17-002C. After specifically asking about powertrain warranty coverage, ____stated that she wasn't sure if either issue is covered but she would check with your warrany rep and advise before repairs.

When I arrived to pick up my truck ____ advised that the axle seal was replaced under warranty which I am thankful for. However, I was billed $45 to grease the yoke, despite my protest and polite request to understand why it's not covered under the powertrain warranty. ____'s reply was that "it was a labor only fix, no parts so not covered" and that her warranty rep denied the claim for the yoke and she couldn't do anything about it. I also asked why the brake shoe, which had obviously been destroyed by the differential fluid leaking from the seal wasn't replaced, and wasn't given a satisfactory answer. I poked my head into your office (Friday afternoon) to voice my dissatisfaction and ask for your opinion and you stated the yoke fix was a "gray area" in the warranty, asked for my name and said you would discuss with ____. My questions remain;

1) The slip yoke issue. I know of many folks who regularly have this serviced under warranty at other dealerships, many are even receiving a nickel-plated yoke because the grease fix only lasts a short time. I can't help but wonder if your department made a decision long ago not to cover this…Had _____ advised that was the case I would have accepted it, but I felt deceived by being told she would contact a warranty rep…am I really the first one to ask? Could you please explain why this is not a powertrain-warranted issue?

2) The destroyed brake shoe. I now have the expense of replacing the brakes myself, due to the axle seal leak. If one part fails which is under warranty, destroying another (even if it's a wear item) does the warranty not extend to cover the collateral damage? What about good faith repairs? Do you regularly send vehicles out with failing brakes?

I have been a regular at _____ for service, parts and recently body shop work after recently moving to Springfield and have been very happy until now. We are a die-hard family of GM owners, who regularly buy new and value our dealership relations. Can you offer any resolution?

Thanks,

+1

Its the small ripoffs and lies that are the worst, because the dealer will get away with it most likely cause the average joe doesnt know/care.

the first thing that came to my mind is that they fixed the yolk under warranty, then charged you for it and pocketed the difference for their profits. same thing is possible with the brake shoe, wrote it up under warranty that they replaced it, never installed the parts, and pocketed gm's reimbursement. if that is the case, you have a deadbeat dealer for sure.

A new grease, part # 19257121 (in Canada, 19257122), was recently released for lubrication of slip yoke splines to repair a condition of a bump feel or clunk noise at stop or from launch on the vehicles equipped with 4L60 Automatic Transmission (RPO M30) and 2WD. Please see Bulletin # 09-04-17-002C for details.

Do not use the new grease for lubrication of slip yoke splines on 4WD vehicles. The output shaft in a 4WD transfer case does not have a grease retainer to keep the grease from migrating into the transfer case and mixing with the fluid inside. The new grease is not compatible with the Automatic Transmission fluid used in the transfer case and can cause damage if mixed. Lubricate the splines on 4WD vehicles with Automatic Transmission Fluid, P/N 88861003 (in Canada, 88861004). Please refer to Bulletin # 09-04-21-003B for repairing the bump feel or clunk noise condition on 4WD vehicles.

So Did you buy the truck there? Then there is no excuse. But if you got it elsewhere they have every right to make that judgment call to charge you on "gray area" Now if they charged you AND submitted a warranty claim that's wrong.

My dealer is like that. if you bought it there they will work their ass off to get it covered or if it's a labor only fix they will not charge you or it will be minimal. if you didn't buy it there, and get a warranty denial right away you're paying

I can't blame them for being like that. too many people go to the city to save 500 bucks then want the local guys to bend over backwards for them in service.
