K&N filter issue

Recommended Posts

I bought a drop in type K&N filter for my 2010 GMC 6.2 Sierra. I went for a drive & immediately noticed a hesitation every time you put your foot on the gas from a dead stop, if you were moving at speed, it wasnt very noticable. On the way home from work, I got a check engine icon that is lit up on my dash. The filter is the proper model for the truck, it is not over oiled, & installed correctly. The truck has 15,000 miles on it. Does the computer need to "learn" a new air filter?

No, Put the oem filter back in and see what happens.

Sounds like you knocked something loose or didnt seal the airbox back up??? I have had my K&N filter in both my vehicles for sometime (50K total miles between the 2) with 0 issues.

Well, I found the problem, the corner of the airbox nearest the tranny cooler lines was not down tight - I re-installed the filter & aibox & all is good to go :happysad:

thanks guys

Glad you resolved your issue. One piece of advice, buy another filter, not now but before you need to clean the one that's in your truck. The thing that gets most people in trouble is not allowing the filter enough time to dry after a clean and oiling. I you buy another filter you'll never have to worry about the possibility of getting oil on your MAF.. I have (or had) 3.

I always tried to save the old filter for this purpose but that only works if you bought a drop in and not an entire kit.

I clean and re oil mine once a year.. Its extremely easy to do. I wash it with the cleaner, rinse it, and let it sit in the sun for a couple hours to dry. Then spray with oil and let sit for a bit to soak in.. then final step before putting back in is to use my blow nozzle on compressor and hold it about 1 foot away minimum, and get rid of any excess oil (which there is usually not much but it takes away that chance of oil getting to the maf)

They reccomend not using comoressed air , but if you hold it away it will not hurt it. Its when you hold it close and the air tears the filter you get in trouble
