I have a 09 GMC 1500 with 5.3 with 140000 miles I haven't owned the truck but a few months . but afew weeks ago it developed a misfire on number 4.Witch ended up being a burnt ex valve. Had both heads worked and when i picked it up it would run a short time an oil pressure would drop to 0. shop that worked on it changed the sensor and didnt help when they said AFM system valve was sticking and they added a cleaner to the oil and it stopped dropping to 0 but with the motor warm at a stop light it only carries about 10 on the gauge when I called them about it all I get is that as long as it has 7 it ok is this correct?

I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less than 20 psi at idle.

Sounds like GM's spec is 7psi at idle. Back in the old days, Dodges with just the idiot light would flicker the light when oil pressure was 7 psi, and come on solid with anything under 7psi.

What was the oil pressure before you fixed it?

Rule of thumb has always been 10 psi for every 1,000 rpm. If that is a correct assumption, then idling at 700 rpm would have 7 psi and be acceptable.

No gm truck I've had has had less than about 30psi at idle. I think his shop is just telling him it's ok so they don't have to work on it anymore. You would have to show me specs from gm saying 7psi is ok.

Gm specs are pretty low in my opinion, but I wouldn't like that. Sounds They did have some oil pump issues. Can't remember what years. Id get it checked out and possibly put a pump in it before you trash a motor.

To the OP,

1 of 2 things has happened here...........

1. The boys that did the work on your truck screwed the pooch and did some internal damage to your engine or

2. It's coiencidence that your engine decided to either plug up the screen in front of the oil pressue sending unit and show you a low pressure or there is internal damage to the engine causing your low pressure.
