Best way to touch up large missing paint spots?

Due to some rock chips the previous owner never attended to they have now got large in some area. What is the best way to touch them up? Dare I buy some duplicolor in the correct color and tape off the offending area, sand then paint and wet sand and clear like normal?

What has everyone else done with paint spots like this?

How big we talkin? I mean rock chips the size of a crumb might be best to dupliclor pen. If bigger you may wanna repaint or have a shop touch up

they range from 1/4" round to almost dime sized. I have one on the drivers side curve of the front fender by the hood, one on the passenger side 3rd door by the window and about 4-5 on the rocker panel under neath the drivers side door.

The others are normal rocks that I can manage with the normal touch up paint.

I want to get these address first so that I can polish the rest of the paint out and get the truck looking better.

You definately don't want to tape just around the area. If you do it that way, it will be very noticable. If the missing paint spots are that large, you want to have it sprayed and blend the paint with the rest of the panel. What color is your truck?

Olympic White

Thought was to tape off area, sand it to prep area, then make taped area slightly bigger and spray with paint until evenly covered. Then wet sand lightly to remove tape ridge, move tape to slightly larger area and spray clear with a couple of coats then remove everything and wet sand lightly and polish out.

local shops wants almost $600 for the fender, $500 for the door, and $500 for the rocker panel. I am not spending almost $1600 for these spots. just trying to get them covered, make them look a little better and covered so they dont rust.

You pretty much have the repair covered on what to do.

You'll need to go to a body shop supply place, and have them color match you some paint. They'll even load it into spray bombs for you.

None of the off the shelf (even the GM touch up paint) will remotely match. When I got my grill/front facia smoothed and painted on my last truck, they recommended popping the fuel door off, and color matching it (it's just 2 bolts). The book'o'colors had probably 20 shades of Pewter!

This is true I have the same color and got the typical chips on the hood that kept growing I used the duplicolor spray and it is pretty noticable. I'm happy with it just for the fact it is all I can afford/have time for at my current time in life (college) it looks better than the primer and has stopped the chipping but like what is said get some better paint.

Did you check into procing from local body shops? Last summer my brother had his hood chips repaired along with his rocker panels. He was charged $60.00 to have all the chipped areas fixed, not bad IMO. Looks really good and can't even tell there were ever any paint chips.
