Is this coolant in my oil?

Recommended Posts

I know I have a leak. Pulled off the oil cap and this is what I see on the underside.

Is this indicative of a coolant leak in the oil?

Time for a dye test

When my heads were leaking coolant it was more of a bright orange color. Sort of like the fungi you find growing on some dead trees.

Might be coolant hope that it is not. My previous truck had the castech heads and the coolant and oil would get all over my oil fill cap, it was more of a yellow brown color kind of like a thick mucus. If you are loosing a lot of coolant and can't find a leak, that is probably coolant.

I bought a pressure tester today. I tried it earlier, but not for long. I tested for about 20 seconds at 16 psi and for about a minute at 25. The pressure held.

I plan on testing it longer tomorrow (schedule is more flexible).

For my truck where would you suggest I focus my attention during this test? There are the obvious hoses, what next, the seals around the water pump and...

The picture posted from earlier was taken after a short drive of approximately 3 miles.

She's drinking coolant, but not leaving obvious sign of the leak.

if the coolant is evaporating before I have been able to see it, will it show as white stuff? The exhaust does not smell sweet and is not white-although I will double check this tomorrow.

Add dye to your coolant, drive it around for a few mins, then check it with a blacklight

one of your cylinder is leaking - do the compression test

Alright, Just finished the pressure test and found the what I think is the leaking culprit.

This looks like the water pump, doesn't it?

The leak can be seen actually dripping, in the first picture, a little more than half of the way down the belt on the right. Where it is dark, obviously it is wet.. Light its dry. this is immediately behind the fan.

in the picture with the fan, you can see where it is wet as well.

The truck is inn my driveway that leans ever so slightly from left to right, passenger to drivers side. I believe the coolant is following gravity and shows as dripping a little further towards the drivers side than the actual leak is.

What do you think?

Good to know. Thank you for getting back to me on this one...

I will order one today, is AC Delco OEM? Should I replace the thermostat at the same time?

Thanks for the help and the guidance.
