Keyless entry question

A friend of mine has a 99 z71.  This past weekend they changed the battries in the keyless remote and now they now longer work to open the doors.  Do you need to reprogram the remotes after changing batteries.

If you do, does anybody know the procedure off hand.

With my 1998 S-10 you would turn the key on (engine not running), then press and hold the lock & unlock button on the key fob for 3-5 seconds.  The locks in the truck would cycle and it was done.  Not sure if it's the same for full sized trucks or not.

it does have to be synchronized...

Transmitter Synchronization

Resynchronization may be necessary due to the security method used by the RKE system. The transmitter does not send the same signal twice to the receiver.

The receiver will not respond to a signal which has been previously sent. This prevents anyone from recording and playing back the signal from the transmitter.

Resynchronization will be necessary if any of the following are true:

You change the transmitter battery.

You disconnect the vehicle battery.

You push the transmitter button 256 times out of the range of the receiver.

In order to resynchronize the transmitter with the receiver, perform the following steps:

Stand close to the vehicle.

Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter for seven seconds. The door locks should cycle to confirm resynchronization.

You know I had the battery disconnected for 3 hours when I was working on the stereo and some back up lights on my rig, and I didn't need to re-program it...  weird guess they changed the system in 02?

2^8 = 256

2 as in binary computer numbers

Hmm...This is that number and your reply...

This is my head...

Any questions? HA

Yea I found out how to re-sync from the owners manual and printed it out for her but no luck.  Did the unlock/lock hold for seven and it didn't work.

I have the same truck, 99 and have had the battery disconnected before when I did the body lift and didn't have to re-sync.  My boss had to change his battery on the remote and didn't re-sync.   ???

Not sure what is going on here.

Here is another question, probably really technical but, how does the truck know what the next signal will be if it keeps changing the signal it sends every time you press the button?

Anyway, I'm still looking for something that works with out telling her she'll need to take it back to the dealer.

Holding the lock and unlock buttons should work but it can take quite a bit longer that 7 secs.... keep holding until the horn beeps or your lights flash.

Seeing that you have not resolve this issue, I will tell you that I bought an identical remote for my truck from ebay and had to "program" it. I did a search for GM keyless entry programming using google and came up with several hits.

The second set of instructions worked on mine.

Mike

This should work for all 95 to 99 Suburbans, Tahoes, Yukons etc.

Note: You do NOT have to have the keys in the ignition for this to work. The DLC is typically a black connector under the dash near the steering column. A paper clip works great as a jumper wire.

Transmitter Programming

When reprogramming the remote control door lock reciever, All transmitters must be programmed at this time in

order for the transmitters to operate the vehicle. Transmitters not programed at this time will not work and the

procedure will have to be redone with all the transmitters.

1.Ground pin 4 to pin 8 of the data link connector (DLC). The receiver will respond by locking and unlocking

the doors, and activating the liftgate window release (if equipped) within 2 seconds.

2.Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on the first transmitter to be programmed

until the locks cycle (approximately 10 seconds).

3.Repeat step 2 for up to four total transmitters to be programmed (if available). The receiver will respond by

locking and unlocking the doors and activating the liftgate window release (if equipped) within 2 seconds.

4.Remove the ground applied to the DLC.

5.Lock and unlock the doors in order to verify the transmitter operation.

6.Activate the rear window release in order to verify the transmitter operation.

For 2000+ models:

Transmitter Programming

1.Start with the ignition OFF, hold down the power unlock button on the door panel. Turn ignition key ON,

OFF, ON, OFF. Release power unlock button on the door panel. The locks will cycle once.

2.Hold down the keyless entry transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons for 15 seconds. The locks will again

cycle once.

3.Repeat step #2 for each additional keyless entry transmitter.

4.Turn the ignition on to exit the keyless entry transmitter programming mode. Programming is now

complete.

I also tried the second method up in the parking lot.  The one for 2000+.  Supposedly you can also do that for the 99 according to the GM tech manual.  No luck.

I can get the truck into program mode but it just doesn't seem to be getting the signal from the transmitter.  She has two transmitters and the procedures did not work for either.  Also did battery switches with the remotes and new batteries and still nothing.

So I was poking around thinking it must be something with a receiver.  There is a receiver.  It is located in the dash which requires removing the dash to get at it.  This may be bad.  The techs can also use a Tech 2 to program the remotes but I have a feeling that it is probably the receiver.  There is a procedure to test it but again you need to remove the dash.

I found the part online for around $74.  I'm sure this will be about a $200 bill if the dealer does it.  I have instructions on how to do it for her but I just don't want to go changing parts if this is not it.

The following worked for my 99 Tahoe.  Good luck!

1. Locate the data link connector under the dash - it should be directly below the upper steering column.  Using an opened paper clip, connect pin #4 to pin #8.  Pin #4 is the fourth pin on the top row, counting from the left side - Pin #8 is the pin in the upper right corner, eight spaces from the left.  The doors will lock and unlock to signal the beginning of the key-coding program.  Do not remove the paper clip.

2. Simultaneously hold down the lock button and unlock button on one of your keyless remotes until the doors lock and unlock again - this could take 20 seconds or longer.  Quickly follow the same procedure with any additional keyless remotes that you have.

3. All remotes must be programmed within a 60-second period that begins when you program the first remote.   If all remotes are not programmed within 60 seconds, you will have to remove the paper clip and start again with step 1.

4. Once all remotes are programmed, remove the paper clip.  To end the program mode, turn the ignition key on and off one time.
