My thoughts on 2011 F-150 Ecoboost

My impressions of a 2011 F150 ecoboost. Had this as a rental while my truck was in the body shop. Drove it just like my 2500 every day, same roads doing some of the same stuff (would not have liked to tow with it) The ecoboost was zippy, mash the go pedal and it would jump from 1500 rpms to 6500 rpms right now and it would move out pretty fast, pulled onto the interstate and got to 85 mph in the accleration lane. Some buttons were hard for me and my big fat fingers to work, i.e. cruise control was a pain as was the a/c and radio controls.

Fuel economy was the real suprise came from, back and forth to work 10 miles at 60 mph to 65 mph and then 5 stop lights in 3 miles Ford got 17.5 Mpg, I hauled off a bed load of junk took about 20 minutes to load 500 to 750 pounds at most got 15.1 mpg. My truck makes the same trip at 16.8 mpg and when I have a bed load it is over 1000 pounds and I still get 16.5 mpg.

Sorry this got so long just wanted to tell my thoughts. :jester:

I'm glad to hear real world thoughts of the Ecoboost engine. I've got the fat finger problem myself so I can imagine the "joy" it must have been with little buttons. Fuel mileage definitely seems to be the big debate I've been hearing the most about. Some say good, some say, not so much. I think the concept of the ecoboost is valid but still a few years worth of bugs to work out before I'd consider one, in my opinion. Still glad to hear you getting your truck back.

I think for a truck they should put the turbo on the 5.0............ then there would be no debate, everyone would want one! Ford is heading in the right direction with this concept- just need a little "nudge" to give us an ecoboost V8.

That's my problem with it too, it will never be a "truck" because it's a glorified car motor. It revs right out. Interesting to see the mpg results tho.

I bet that EB motor makes more toque at 2000 rpm than anything GM has aside from the Duramax. Calling it a car motor is stupid, just because it showed up first in cars doesn't make it a car motor, same as our trucks since the V8s showed up in the Vette and F body initially. If anything the cars are just proofs of concept for the trucks which both brands make their living from.

My ecoboost was a nice truck overall. Too bad I, and many others, had some safety engine "quirks" that ford couldn't and still can't figure out.

Some more things to add, I thought that there was a can of spray paint it in the way it rattled! I have a gravel drive way and that thing would just about shake you out of the cab. Also it looked like they forgot to put any bolts in the bed to keep it on the frame. It bouced around a lot going down the drive way, That was the one thing I feared most about having my truck taken so far apart is that it would rattle after the repairs, but so far no problems.

I'm sure as I think of more things I will post them here. :jester:

Funny you said that. Mine was a fx4 and the bed bounced like crazy. The frame was so stiff that you could see bed bounce in the sideview mirror

Yeah..............so...........Imagine a 5.0 Eco-Boost! And a larger displacement Eco-Boost for the Super-Duty. GM & RAM would have some catching up to do.

I'd love to see a turbo V8 but it'll be a gas hog and you simply can't have those now.

the ride and build quality was the biggest factor in me getting a gmc a few years ago when I got back in a truck. drove an F-150 xlt cc and a Sierra cc back to back and the ride was so much better in the the Sierra. I loved all the room in the Ford but I know I made the right decision to come back to GM.

There's no way it would be a gas hog. I bet it would be better on fuel than the V6 or anyone else's V8.................and way more power than any current model you can buy today. Look what a turbo did for diesels- remember when diesels couldn't get out of their own way because they couldn't make any horsepower. Well think of what one could do for a gas engine!

Yep! I agree. I think what Chevyboy is saying Mike is the V6 is just not enough displacement for a big truck- great for the Taurus though.
