SarahsGMC Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 does running rich make you burn oil faster? i find alot of black on my tips and when its cool its a very heavy fog when you see the exhaust coming out, someone mentioned it may be running rich.. anyone elses 5.3 vortec do this?
j-ten-ner Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 1L for 1000km? That's what the manual for my dads car said...back then. The manual was for a 1969 Moskvitch 412. so long j-ten-ner
GasHog369 Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 Im at about 3700 miles since last change and im due now. I go twice a year with royal purple full syn.. So far ive added about 1.5 qts. which is high. Its leaking from my oil cooler lines. As soon as i get my tax return back, those will be fixed tho. Although after reading what other people are experiencing mine isnt using too much.
SnakeEyeSS Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 GM is the same. Unless you are using over 1 quart per 1000 miles, they don't consider it excessive in the book. All vehicles use some oil. Most use so little that it's almost impossible to tell between changes. I'd be seriously upset if mine used over a quart between changes... much less a quart every 600 miles! About the time my Intrigue with the short star hit 1qt per 1000 Miles it got traded. The insane part was there was NO smoke. No way to tell unless you were checking the dipstick regularly.
travis73 Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 worst car I ever owned for oil consumption was a 95 Saturn,I would regularly pull into the gas station and tell the attendant to fill the oil and top up the gas,It would use 2qts per 1000km.When I bought it the car was using 1qt per 1000km,the warranty rebuilt the engine for me,then it went to two qts. I paid $2000 for the car, they gave me the option to trade the car for another on their lot, which I diden't like any of them,or take a cash pay out of $1500.00, so I took the money, practically got the car for free and drove it for five years untill I traded it for a new Chevrolet Venture minivan which they gave me $2500.00 for it on trade. The funny thing was, same as above, it never smoked or fowled plugs and worked perfect the whole time I had it,I don't know where the oil was going,it was not leaking any.The last two years I had the car I did not change the oil because I figured it was changing it's self any way so I would just change the filter once a year.
SnakeEyeSS Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Yeah, nothing like the day it goes bad, you see the idiot light, pull the dipstick and immediately look for the oil leak or puddle to not find one. and every now and then, the slight hint of burnt oil....not enough to alarm you, but just enough to drive you crazy.
06pirate Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 My 1990 Toyota 4x4 X-Cab with the 3.0 V-6 burns a quart of Castrol straight 30wt every 1,000 miles. It's been that way for years, now has 360,000 miles on it. I expect it to go to 500,000. No worries.
