Engine oil consumption - Toyota

Doing the first oil change in our van and ran across this page. 1.1 qts per 600 miles max.

Most engines always use a bit of oil. Its a normal thing.

That's almost as much as the 350 in my 1990 was burning before it blew. Seems like a lot?!

 

The part about oil being "diluted", since when does oil get diluted? I would be worried if there was more than I put in.

Coolant dilutes oil quite well, as does raw gasoline. See what I mean by "CYA"?

no not using any. Only have 6500 miles.

 

Just posted it because of all the gm truck engine oil complaints (see the light duty area. (example trucks burning 1 qt of oil per 3K miles)

GM is the same. Unless you are using over 1 quart per 1000 miles, they don't consider it excessive in the book.

 

All vehicles use some oil. Most use so little that it's almost impossible to tell between changes. I'd be seriously upset if mine used over a quart between changes... much less a quart every 600 miles!

Heck I wouldn't be happy with mine if it went down a quart every 5k miles.

GM is 1 qt per 2000. Toyota has previously been 1 qt per 1000, so the 600 is new. Did GM change recently?

Wow. Just think Ryan, you could be about 100 miles away from adding quart number twelve and still have it be considered "normal" consumption in toyota's eyes. "Uh, yes, I'm here because my six month old minivan(Sienna?) is using a lot of oil and I think something is wrong." "I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Smith. How many miles does your van have on it?" According to my GM service manager (and friend) they won't pursue a warranty claim on anything less than 1 quart per 1000 miles. I'm only going on what he says.

I would imagine it may be different by vehicle and motor. I'd bet the 8.1L had a pretty high "acceptable" rate. I had to search, 'cause it's been a while, but found GM bulletin 01-06-01-011F (Jan 13, 2009). There may be a newer one (?).

Oil Consumption

 

The accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in the vehicles referenced is 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 3200 km (2000 mi).

 

Important: This rate only applies to personal use vehicles, under warranty, that are driven in a non-aggressive manner and maintained in accordance with the appropriate maintenance schedule, with less than 58,000 km (36,000 mi), or driven at legal speeds in an unloaded (for trucks) condition.

 

Found the TSB posted here, but that doesn't mean it's right.

That sucks, hope you don't have that problem ever. My truck's oil consumption slowed down drastically following my last oil change. At 2k miles into the cycle and only down 1/2 quart.

at 4000 miles mine only burns a quart

My 4.8 burned a quart to quart and a half per oil change. So 7-10,000 miles
