My first 3/4 ton

I'm not a fan of the 6" ovals myself, but you already have them. I would have "negotiated" price w/ them removed, but that's my opinion. Lots of folks really like the 6" steps. I used the GM 3" steps, and installed the wheel liners. Happy w/ both. The steps are for the kids, and to keep from wearing the outside edge of the drivers seat.

Have you been in a truck with the 5.0? I don't see why anyone touches an ecoboost when that 5.0 is available.

 

The reason for looking at the EB is the forced induction when towing. It makes a big difference on grades, since they just spin up rather than downshifting to 4000 rpm (like a small block NA motor). Modern diesel pulls so well, because those turbos spin up and get torque to the wheels at 1600 rpm. You also get to keep that torque at high altitude. The EB would be a bit of a gamble at this time, but they're selling so many that aftermarket (after warranty) support will be good, I think.

 

I looked into superchargers for my current truck after the warranty expires and beefing up the transmission, but most that I've listened to have a very annoying whine from the twin screws. Exhaust turbine type turbos don't whine. You can hear them, but they're pretty quiet overall.

To each their own, but I think slapping turbos on a tiny motor is no replacement for a 5L+ engine. They've had a few issues with the Ecoboosts as well, and to my knowledge the 5.0 motors have been practically trouble free.

 

I always thought turbos were louder than superchargers. But I like the sound both of them.

No question there, but the same is true on modern diesels. My thinking is that I'd rather have a GM 5.3 than a Ford 5.0, all else equal. I know the Coyote is strong, but I haven't heard much from guys towing w/ them to know how it compares to a 5.3. I'm guessing that there's not enough difference between them to worry about. Definitely not enough to pay big $$ for, and Ford is proud of their trucks right now. My past (poor) experience w/ Ford certainly doesn't help.

 

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an EB fan boy... at all. I don't trust them at this point, and definitely don't trust Ford. I just think that they have a good platform to work with, *if* they are serious about building a long lasting motor. If they do like they normally do and ignore problems while they build the "next big thing" (like the 6.0 diesel crap), then they won't be worth their weight in scrap 10 yrs from now.

I dunno I personally won't pay 40k or more to be fords guinea pig. Maybe if they actually decided on an engine for more than 3-4 years I would trust them but until they keep an engine around for a decade I won't touch them. At least when Gm claims to make a good motor it actually is. Not just a media hyped piece of junk like most of fords truck engines, only good one IMO was 7.3. It had its issues but overall it was a stout long lasting engine. Remember the 6.4 adds on tv??? LOL "even the turbo has a turbo" lolololol that fad ended real fast when they found out how much it was costing them.

(I say "Eco" because the 5.0 is just as good on fuel)they do not stay in a higher gear and pull thru hills, it downshifts hard and revs right to the heavens. that little v6 just SCREAMS for mercy when it's towing. Also the f-150 from 09 on has a really confused acting transmission, it unpredictable and clunky.

 

Also the EB has a TSB out already too for moisture building up in the intercooler on long steady trips. Then if you stomp on it to pass it will suck the water in and bog. I have been in one often because our work rented one, we towed 10k with it. It still feels like towing with a half ton lmao...but a snappy little truck to say the least, little cute thing.

Thanks for posting this. Yes, I've driven the EB, but I've never towed heavy w/ one. I've talked w/ folks that do, and they claim to pull mountains in 5th gear w/ 8000 lbs behind them. Makes me wonder where the truth is. It may be that they were slowing down, and you guys were going faster? Not sure, but the specs show ~400 ft/lbs at 2000 rpm.

 

That said, I feel the same way about Ford. The 6.0 junk that folks had to deal with over the past few years has been ridiculous (I don't say junk very often). Ford does seem to change their motors every few years, and basically "drop" everyone before that. They push the latest thing, and forget the past.

 

Let me say this: I've looked at the F150, but I haven't been too impressed w/ the build. I very much appreciate the interior layout for a family, but that's about it so far. I said this somewhere before, but I don't think it was here. The rear door (the small one) on my truck feels more solid than the front door (the big one) on the F150. I can't overstate how much more solid my GMC feels compared to the F150's I've looked at. I may be exaggerating, or maybe I'm not "feeling" it right, but that's been my impression.

 

I've looked at the Tundra over the past few years too. I'm not a big fan of the styling, but it is family friendly in Crewmax form (like a SUV w/ a small bed). The components underneath look good... definitely not "junk". The rear frame section, tailgate, and sheet metal are light for sure, but that 5.7/6-spd is a strong combo, and the steering/linkage/bearings/etc look good (not HD heavy, but stout for a "half ton"). Not a big fan of the styling though...

I owned a new 2002 F250 7.3L, nice nice truck, you could over load it and abuse it from one coast to the other and it wouldn't care. Then I bought a new 2009 6.4L diesel F250... JUNK!! Sold it with in 6 months. Done with Fords.

That 7.3 is a damn good engine

I've said this before, if you like your 6.0 don't drive a DMax or you will want to trade!! I use my truck as a truck a lot. It hauls or pulls stuff about 50% of the time, and my old 6.0 did it for 186,000 miles this DMax is night and day different, where the 6.0 would down shift and grunt a little the Dmax just powers on. But you have a good looking truck!!
