2004 Rumors

I have heard that the Duramax gets an upgrade, new heads (still aluminum) and a better turbo.  Also, someone posted on the diesel page that there is a rumor that the HD's may get a straight front axle on the 4X4's.  Then, in 2005 a new V-10 comes out.

2005 a new V-10???

2004/2005 DOD (displacement on demand) will come out in the gas engines.  Only major development I have heard which is a fact

I would wait and see a reliable industry source.  Many rumors get started by wishes.;)

GM scrapped the V-10 plans in order to go with their new and improved Big Block 8.1.  Several issues were involved one primarily being cost both on R&D/engineering as well as tooling up an assembly facility.

Issues also invloved cylinder firing and how an odd number cylindered engine doesn't run as smooth as an even numbered.  They detail all these issues in a recent issue of GMHTP about why GM stuck with the Big Block instead of copying ford and Dodge with V-10's.

Big news in the diesel front and one of the reasons I've been told to chill my jets on purchasing a diesel, was that GM is rumored to be coming out with a DuraMax 7800 as well as improvements to the current 6600.

The 7800 is out now.  Unfortunately, it is a medium/heavy duty engine, and is only available in the Kodiak/TopKick 6500/7500/8500.  It is a big OHC straight six, and I seriously doubt it would fit in any pickup.  Here is a link to an article someone posted on pickuptruck, com a while back.  I too read that a V-10 was being considered in the late 1990's.  It was to be based on the LS-1 small block, but was deemed too expensive and unsuitable for larger commercial trucks.  This V-10 appears to be something new:

I would think if long term tests are done....the V12 will go in the 3 Caddy's to make another major point that Cadillac is the top end.  The Denali right now is a relative bargain compared to the Escalade in the SUV power, size, appointments category being same.

no v-10 when they could drop in the crate 8.1 motor which is a much stronger motor power and torque wise.

Or the new 8.1 marine motor which has HP and torque numbers almost double what the 8.1 in the trucks currently have now.

What other Rumours - Facts - do you guys know ?  How about apperance ? Any spy shots or guys that work for GM - that know anything about the sheet metal...preferably doing something to TOUGHEN UP the look of the HD models ? - The slanted look is pretty whimpy  compared to the 2002 HD's ?

Also - as for V-10's ... Did you know that Fords V-10 has a harmonic dampener on the Passenger side Camshaft ? Whats that about ???

I can believe GM would go with a V10.  Why not?  Ford's V10 makes more torque per displacement than the 8100 and gets better mileage.  It seems to me that higher cylinder engines are more efficient in mileage and performance than V8 motors of similar displacement.  GM would have a winner on their hands if they went with a Vortec V10! :thumb:

Looky:

8.1L Vortec V8 = 56.2lb-ft/Liter

6.8L Triton V10 = 62.5lb-ft/Liter

So maybe a Vortec 8.1L V10 would make a max 505lb-ft :)  When Ford's V10 goes to the new 3-valve/cyl design it will most likely get it's max torque bumped up to 450lb-ft and the rumor is that a Triton 8.2L V12 is on it's way for the new '05 Superdutys.  Do the math and you can see that it'll be up into the 540lb-ft range and probably still get 10 mpg.  The Dodge boards are talking about the Magnum 8.0L V10 being replaced with a "hemi" V10 too.  God only knows what it will be rated for??

Looks to me like GM will eventually have to go to V10s or V12s for their pickups due to the emissions and mpg considerations alone.  If you're a die-hard GM man  I wouldn't worry too much about it-I'm sure they'll keep ahead of Ford's and Dudge's offerings anyway... :nono:

GM is looking at doing a V10.  Not sure exactly when it's thought of coming out, but I have heard sources say that there is a program.

Don't wanna say too much more.
