Front Diff grind

'06 Silverado E/C 5.3L......driving to work, out of nowhere, sudden grind like brakes metal to metal....but I know it's not brakes.....lasted 10 seconds.....happened 3 more times on the way home......off to the dealer. They can't make it happen, so they check everything they can, then check the Front Diff fluid......sez it's gray, and had metal filings.....flush and refill, drive and see if it comes back.....said that sometimes the clutch packs in the Diff stick, and that would cause the grind. I drove 1 mile, and it came back......now they say it sounds like the 4WD is trying to engange......this sounds more likely being it intermittent. What do the experts think ???....and, is this something they see often ???....the truck has the manual shift on the floor 4WD, not the push button

Sorry I'm not a tech on vehicles, but that sounds exactly what my truck did when my passenger side wheel bearing gave out. It went from quiet, barely noticeable to horrific in about 2 seconds. I get the front end up and check for yourself. Definitely get it checked out regardless, whether or not that's it, I'd get a second opinion from another shop/dealer.

The Wheel Bearing came to mind, but the grind is intermittent, I would think a Wheel bearing would be constant, but it is always in the back of my mind......I know it will be an issue sooner or later

I'd check it all the same, my driver's side went so slowly that it wore my tires funny before I caught on to what was actually happening.

I really doubt it is the 4x4 trying to kick in. Clutches in the front diff? I don't know about that one. But it's probably a wheel bearing, they're very easy to change and you'll have to do it sooner or later.

Not the same setup I know, but when i had my AWD SS, the front diff went. The gears in it basically started to disintegrate. Had a very milky/silver fluid everytime I changed it. the estimate i got to rebuild it was about 1100 if i remember correctly. It started with a slight growl over 35 mpg and went to to being constant growl all the time. Thankfully i was able to it covered under warranty even though I bought it used. After a hell storm at least haha

Maybe the same thing is happening to yours? how often do you use 4WD?

I would do what others said first tho, check those wheel bearings...

When he mentioned the "Clutch Pack" I was thinking "in the Diff ???....aren't Clutch Packs in the Trans ???"....anyhow, they are saying it's gotta be the Diff, and they are tearing it down as we speak.....if they are wrong, believe me, there will be hell to pay....I'll cut the Wife loose on thier arse :idiot::M16::devil:

Just got the call.....Front Diff is not the problem......now they want to tear down the Transfer Case. Told them to park it in a safe corner of the lot....gotta think about this one....maybe time for a new truck, this might be the beginning of the end for this one, and she just turned 91,000 miles. This is one of the reasons that, up till this truck, I always got a new one before warranty expires :sigh:

PS: If they got it wrong the first time they'll get it wrong again. This is why I said take it to someone else. Or inspect and replace the bearings yourself.

They are saying that this is with no doubt, the problem, and are working with thier "Good Will Policy" to cut down the cost. This place usually takes two tries to get ANYTHING right, and make it up to us with other freebies and discounts. Unfortunately, there are no independants around here that are any better, I go here because they have bigger backing

what does oil look like in t case ???

frt diff clutch pack ???? lmfao !!!

There was heavy metal filings in the Transfer Case fluid. They found a bad Bearing and Race.....Wife picked up the truck last night. I was happy to get back in my truck......until this morning......on the way to work....slight grind intemittently, and did hear a Bearing growl for a few seconds....bringing it in Monday morning.....I WILL NOT drop another penny into this repair
