I am surprised that no one has reported the ad. In Canada we are not allowed to advertise using standard measurements, unless part of the target audience is the States and the source of the ad is within so many kilometers of the border. Problem with that ad is that the units of measure they are using is not one that states uses, so, the net result is the ad is misleading to US consumers, and unlawful for Canadian consumers. Not sure who handles the complaint, most likely the CRTC in Ottawa, or Advertising Standards Canada. I will take a look and see, and will also file a complaint. The ad is misleading to a large part of the intended audience.

Don't have any stats, but, from my own experience with Americans is that more often than not, they are not aware that the gallon in Canada is one US quart bigger than the US gallon. Imperial quart is 40 ounces, with 4 making up the gallon. This also means our pint is larger.

Everybody knows Canucks can drink more... so it makes sense!

I don't think 30mpg is that hard with a light truck, aero package, low rolling resistance tires, torque minded motor and tall gears. But the Question I have is do they have the same emissions in Canada as the US? Could that be a minor factor in the higher numbers?

I've seen on Dieselpowermag.com of a 1 ton 5.9 cummins with a 12 valve get 31 mpg off the guys calculations, but I think he had an additional overdrive behind the trans and was tooled towards economy while still being able to pull.

If an 89' first gen 12 valve can do it. So can the diesels we have now, sadly they won't tho. Nuff said.

Thank the EPA for that one.

Canadian emissions standards are same as American emission standards since 2011. I think that before that, the US standards were more strict than ours. From what I recall the sticker under the hood would say the vehicle met Canada and US emission standards. Quebec and British Columbia had been using California standards prior to 2011. For as long as I can remember, there have been two standards in North America, 49 state and California.

The big difference in mileage claims between the two countries is due to the size of the gallon. Ours is 25% bigger than the US gallon (160 ounce to 128 ounce).

Thank you!

So back to diesel mpgs.. Im guessing Europe also uses imperial MPG's.. but VW has a lil Bluetec or something 3 cylinder 1liter turbo'd diesel car that gets 70-75 mpgs over their.. which 75 x 128 / 160 = 60 us MPG. So even if a car is kind of impractical for long trips, but is able to pull down 60mpgs with a little worse emissions output, but still gets twice the MPG the average small car can pull down.. I don't see how 1/2 fuel consumption doesn't trump a little emisions, vehicles like that could cut our fuel consumption considerably. I'd own a little reliable diesel and drive it back and forth to work / errands and get 6 X the mpg's I average in my truck.
