05 silverado 1500 no start, fuel guage reads empty

Can someone help. My truck had does this a few times but now it wont start at all. The fuel tank reads empty but is full, the starter will crank one time then I have to pull the relay before it will crank again. In the past when this has happened, I thought it was the fuel pump relay and swapped relays then it always started. Now nothing. Help please.

What two relays were you swapping? Has your full gauge ever gone to empty and you not had a starting issue? How many miles on the truck? How many times has this happened and over what sort of time span are we talking? The engine turns over once and then the starter shuts off correct? Have you checked any fuses related to the starting system?

Check Ign A, Ign E and Crank fuses in the underhood fuse block.

91K miles. All fuses good. Happened approx 6 times over a 6 month period, once three times within an hour.. Swapped fuel pump relay with horn relay. Engine turns over one time, then when I remove the relay and put it back it will crank once again

Ok....what about the fuel gauge reading empty at other times? I don't see a connection between the two so far. Do you own and know how to use a multimeter?

Why would you swap the relays back....are they not the same part?

Just a little more on the subject....

Let me see if I've got this straight.....your try to start your truck, it physically attempts to start and then ceases.....you swap the horn and fuel pump relays and attempt another start.....it attempts to start once again then ceases.....you then swap the relays back to the original positions and everything is works normal? Or do you just swap the relays then swap them back w/o attempting a start and it fires up normally? Do you have any type of aftermarket remote start, etc. installed on this truck? Any notifications on the instrument panel?

So right now your truck will not physically start? (meaning the starter motor doesn't do jack when the key is in the start position) If this is the case does the solenoid "click" when you turn the ignition to "start"?

I try to start the truck. I turn the key to the ON position and the fuel guage does not move,

(If the fuel guage does move the truck will start).

I turn the key to the START position and the truck turns over but doesnt start. If I attempt to start it again nothing happens, No click, no cranking. I am wondering if there is a relation between the fuel system and the starting system.

Bottom line is that when the fuel guage will not move with the key in the ON position, the truck will not start.

I would swap the relays thinking there was a bad connection. Relays are all good.

No aftermarket remote start.

I would check wiring all the way to the tank. pay close attention to grounds as well.

Take txab's advice and i'll dig into the schematics a little later.....kinda tied up with some LSU baseball at the moment.

When the fuel gauge doesn't move when you put key in 'run' does the check engine light come on? If the PCM is functioning properly the check engine light should come on with the key in 'run' if the engine is not running.

please refer to post #2

how many times do i have ...... lol

anyone think security concern ?,,idk my crystal ball went for a **** yestarday lol

good news is my leafs won tonight !!!!

You never did say if you had a multimeter and knew how to use it. The PCM may very well be preventing the engine from starting based on the lack of fuel pressure....it has to send a ground signal to the starter relay in order for the solenoid to get the necessary voltage it needs to do it's job. I don't see that in the starter schematics though. I'm still diggin....

Thats exactly the kind of info I was hoping to get. Yes I have a multimeter and know how to use it. Is it possible that a lack of fuel pressure would affect the guage as well.

I'm thinking that when the key is turned to the ON position, that triggers the fuel pump, the pressure triggers the relay that allows the starter to crank.

does that sound correct? Someone else said that there is some kind of pressure switch on the intake manifold that sends a signal to the ECM.
