TPMS question

I bought some oem 20s for my truck a few months ago with no tpms. Now that the snow is finally gone I want to get them installed on my truck. I went to 2 places to get a price to have the sensors switched from my stock 17s to the 20s and have the 20s put on the truck. Both places said they couldnt switch the sensors for different reasons. One place said it couldnt be done because I need tpms for 20s and mine are made for 17s so I need new sensors. The other place said the sensors are glued to the wheel so they cant be removed. Is any of this true? I didnt realize this would be such a process to have these tpms swithed and the wheels installed.

If your truck has rubber valve stems, you will need another set of stems for the 20's minimum because the sensor bolts to the stem inside the wheel. If you have bolt in sensors with metal stems you need nothing and they can be swapped with ease.

If your switching out for winter get a second set. Better than a dash light for 4 months. There were some in the for sale section reasonably priced (cheap) :)

TPMS has been out for 5 model years now and I am surprised how many tire shops and even dealerships still don't know anything about. Its time some of these people got themselves educated on new technology and stopped acting iliterate. Only the valve stems are different for different types of wheel and not the sensors. You have to change them anyway as is recommended by the manufacturer and at a minimum change the seals and nuts on the bolt in type. The Rubber snap in type are not reusable. The kits and replacement valve stems are cheap at $4 to 8 each depending on the type and every different sensor manufacturer uses a different valve stem.

Thanks for the responses guys. I am suprised to at how little (or full of crap) tire shops know about TPMs. I bought a second set of monitors to put in the new wheels, thanks again.
