What speakers do I need?

I have a couple of speakers out in my 07 1500 Crew cab, and I am not sure what kind of speaker I need. I know its a 6 3/4" speaker in the doors, and that some 6 1/2" might fit. What Im unsure about is what kind of speaker I need as far as construction is concerned. Do I get a 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, or component? Im just looking for something to run on the factory power source, by either the factory HU, or maybe some day an aftermarket unit. Im not running an amp or any extra wiring, but I would like something that will perform as good, or possibly a little better than stock. Im also looking to stay on a tight budget, which might mean a trip to the local Wal-Mart, so don't bother suggesting speakers that are $100+ a pair. I can handle something like $40/pair.

 

What do you recommend given these criteria?

Also, I do believe I have the factory tweeters in the door, not the Bose system. At least, I think those are tweeters.

I'm running Pioneer TS-A1674R 6.5" 3-way speakers. They sound great and were only like $60 for a pair at Best Buy.

Would the 3-ways be too high with the factory tweeters?

Factory tweets are weak. I don't think they're too bright. They sound way better than the factory stuff regardless.

What exactly does all that 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, component, etc. mean? I can set up an amp, and I know about electronics and power requirements. I know the difference between Subs, mids, and tweeters, but I am not exactly sure about all that other stuff.

Rather than starting a separate thread, Im just gonna post my next question on here.

 

If I wanted to add some bass to my truck (not saying I am right now, but IF I did decide to), which setup would be better; a single 10 in a ported box with 1.9 cu.ft. of air and the port directed at the C pillar, or a sealed box with 2 10s with .6 cu.ft. of space per chamber?

 

I primarily listen to country music, but have been known to throw in some rock or alternative from time to time. Im just looking for something that will compliment the non-amplified aftermarket door speakers, but will make decent sound if I did decide to roll the windows down and crank it up. I don't want a door shaker, but some boom would be nice. Again, Im just asking for future reference if I decided to do this later.

The sky's the limit with this, if you want an ultimate package, instead of throwing 3-way's into the door, put mid's in all the doors, add new tweeters including to the rear by custom cutting holes for them, add a new HU and run all four tweeters to the HU and run the mids to a separate amp. Add an 8in Subwoofer and have a shop custom fit it behind the rear seat. Don't forget to add baffles and also dyno matt or sound deadening material to the door panels and rear cab wall.

 

That will cost some pretty pennies but you could slowly build that system up if not, just order a run of the mill box and match a shallow mount sub(s) to it. Find your amp and power away!

All coaxial speakers have only one woofer (the large cone), and the others are an array of mid range and tweeters. Component speakers are seperated. You have a midbass speaker and a tweeter mounted in seperate locations.

Yeah that's way more money, and effort, than I want to put in it. Im just looking for a nice crisp, quality sound that is played just below a conversational level 90% of the time. But, I don't want the other 10% sound pathetic. im just looking for a good budget minded system, if such a thing exists.

 

I will give you an example of what Ive run in the past. My last truck had a factory refurb. Pioneer HU ($85 on ebay), Sony X-plod 4-way speakers in the front doors ($45 at Wally World), Some 4x6 speakers I bought off another member on here ($35 I think), and a pair of Kicker Comp 10" subs ($40 each) in a homemade box, powered by a used Rockford Fosgate amp that my dad gave me.

The ported box is gonna be a little more boomy but it also depends what the ported box is tuned at. If you give me dimensions and port size i can tell you the tuning frequency. The sealed box is gonna be a pretty tight bass sound. I like a ported box..I listen to country as well and country music has alot of bass!

Well, for what I can get the ported single box, and outfit it for, I can get a double sealed box already loaded. My only question is whether to get the one loaded with Boss subs, or spend an extra $30 for a pair of Rockford Fosgate subs. Ive never heard of Boss, but I dont know anything about Fosgate stuff either. Im primarily a Kicker guy. Anyone know anything about Boss speakers?

Which level fosgate or kickers? I am a JL man myself. My 2 10" w1's sound good in my friends crew cab. His box is sealed
