Is it OK to run 85 weight oil instead of 75? Cause I normally run 75W-90 mobile 1 synthetic in it but if the higher weight will help the steeper gears stay cooler I'll just run that instead

Yes, I use 85w-140 in my 10 bolt rear-end, 2001 Z28 (Sara), the thicker oil helps trap and dissipate the heat.

If you are going to change the ring and pinion, look into cryo'ing the gears first.

"Heat Treat" is just another word for "Anealing" which softness the metal first.

This process IMHO is not needed when Cryo'ing. The sub zero temperatures of this procedure will eliminate the contamination in the metal, and will strengthen the gears once completed.

If you are doing both front and rear gears, YES I would do both, if you are only doing one, cryo just that.

9 years ago, the cryo process was $100 added to the cost of the ring and pinion, now Sara (2001 z28) has an upgraded rear end.

Thanks for the info. Now, do you know where to get gears cryo'd? I searched online and havent found anyone...

Just contacted Randy's Ring/Pinion and they recommended me to two companies. Both offer cryo to both gear sets for $45 a piece plus shipping. So maybe 130 at the most and Im golden. Plus, it doesnt void my warranty!!!

One place wanted to charge me $320 and that was without shipping!

And what brand of gear oil are you running? I was at my local AZ yesterday and they have mobile 1 full syn 85w-140 and Lucas oil in the same weight, I don't think it was synthetic. The price difference was like $12 a quart!

I am running "dino" oil vs synthetic, because Sara (2001 Z28) has an LSD (Zexel-Torson) and using a synthetic oil could cause slippage (more so in the Auburn units).

Your truck does not have an LSD, I would save the money and use the dino oil, and change it every 75k. If your vehicle sits a lot, go with the synthetic.
