How many miles did you put on your truck before the hum came back?

I'd say about 1,000. I can check for the exact amount but I remember it had between 500 and 600 miles when I got it back, and I'm at 1,600 or so now.

I would be interested in seeing what part number your replacement differential has and whether or not it is the same as my replacement. I previously posted pictures of the tag from my original and replacement differential.

My truck is a 2014 Chevy Silverado 5.3 with a 3.42 rear. I've got the same noise (noise like someone blowing air into a pop bottle). The noise comes on around 55 and goes away around 70. It growls in and out. The noise is heard under any load and if you let the gas/cruise off it temporally goes away. The noise is very annoying. The noise does not go away with 4x4 auto engaged. With the 4x4 engaged the sound changes to a more graining type noise almost grinding. The truck is at the Chevrolet dealer right now. The shop foreman took it for a drive and he did verify the noise. They are trying to compare it to a similar truck on their lot. As with everyone else’s posts this is very frustrating and has been at the Chevrolet dealer now for a couple of days….

Update:

Just got my truck back from the Chevy dealer. The dealer said even though they have a documented a noise from my truck there is still nothing they can do. Really? They said they drove a similar truck as mine and it sounded fairly similar to mine. Apparently, even though there are many documented cases (over 200 related posts between two subject lines on this forum alone) there are still no technical bulletins or recalls for this issue. Funny too is that I talked to the guy driving me back and forth to the dealer and he said his 2011 Z71 4x4 truck makes no noises at any speeds. How can Chevrolet claim the 2014 full size truck to be “the quietest full size pickup on the market?”

You will find like the rest of us that GM has decided that this humming sound is "acceptable" to them. Three engineers,one Zone Mgr< five trips to dealer,lots of time wasted to hear that the noise is O>K> with them. That's after two loaner Silverados didn't make any noise at all. That's the kind of service a three time repeat Silverado owner can expect from GM. Then you can take it to another dealer and have them tell you it's tire noise and the engineers were wrong. They will run you in circles til your warranty runs out then the rear end will fail. That's where the problem lies. Pinion gears and shims and rear-end gears.

I contacted the GM Rep they said there is nothing they can do. No suggestions no nothing. I guess I am out of luck. For whatever it is worth I test drove another truck exact same as mine but a 2015 and it made no noise at all. I just wanted to make sure I was not losing my mind. I wanted to drive a 2014 like mine but none were available at the time. I guess I am stuck with the noise. Owning Chevy’s for 25 years now this makes me want to jump ship….

At least I got an extended warranty out of it after multiple trips to the dealer to meet with GM engineers and Zone Mgrs. The warranty however doesn't extend the 5 yr 100,000 mi. on the drivetrain. You may want to try and get that out of them or maybe contact a lemon law attorney depending on the miles on your truck and the age.My dealer has been more then helpful and I think they were involved in getting the extended warranty. I think the plan was called PLATINUM and it's bumper to bumper for an additional 5yrs and 50000 miles from the date they approved it. I was told the warranty was over $2000.00.

Anything new on this? I had my truck in a couple times for this but they can't seem to fix it. I drive a 2007 F-150 company truck with over 200,000 miles and I swear, I'd rather drive it than my 2014 Shakerado!!

My Chevy Shakerado is over 40,000 miles now so I'm sure I can't get any work done performed under warranty by my dealer, I just would love to know what the fix is if I'm going to keep this thing!

My rhythmic hum was coming from the front right and was gone toady. It was faint last year, but much much louder this year. Any time the temps were below 45F is was very loud.

- I had my truck up on jack stands (wheels off) this weekend to apply some wax undercoating. I sprayed wd40 on the front strut body, spring perch ring on the strut (soaked it from top to bottom) and any bolt that an alignment tech would need to get to. I also sprayed the lower strut mount and applied amorall extreme tire dressing on the cv boots and wd40 again to the cv joint hub connection. This was to keep the wax coating from sticking to things I wanted to remain clean.

Well, today at 40F the drive was silent, not a little better, but silent. Something changed on mine as these trucks don't fix themselves or maybe I got lucky today.

Can someone else give this a try?

Hi I'm new...my truck also has this humming noise. Sounds like a the front diff or that it's stuck in 4wd or something. Starts around 55mph and gets worst around 70-75, and fades out above that. I'll see what the dealer says. 14k miles on a 15 slt crew. Wasn't there until somewhat recently.

Any long term updates on this? 2018 silverado doing the same thing with less than 1k miles. I notice it 55 to 65 mph and louder under load. It's driving me crazy. I have not had time to take it to the dealer yet. I am considering a lift and 35s. However I'm apprehensive because if something does finally give in the differential, I don't want to be left holding the bag because "my modifications caused the failure." I am also considering regearing to 4.10s if I go to 35s. Forgive my ignorance, but would that totally replace the ring, pinion, bearings that some of these guys got replaced? The 4x4 shop that regears it should set the backlash and preload on the new gears anyhow, right? Thus eliminating this problem, of course assuming the shop that regears knows what they're doing.

I too have a hum, silence, hum, silence... between 50-70 mph on my 2017 Silverado 1500 4x4. Noise started around 10,000 miles and truck currently has about 15,000 miles. It goes away if transmission temp goes over 170. It goes away temporarily if I put the truck in Auto 4wd when I'm hearing the noise. I can leave the truck in Auto 4wd for 5-6 seconds, then shift back into 2wd and the noise stays gone for awhile. Noise is consistent in any gear. Noise is consistent in V4 or V8 mode. Dealer has heard the noise, although it's been hard to hear with rain, wind, etc at times. Dealer cannot pinpoint where noise is coming from and hopes it will get louder and easier to locate.

Enthusiast, have you had any resolution to your problem? Does your noise match my description above? Has anyone else on this forum who's posted above found a good fix for the hum, silence, hum... problem? This is the only information on the internet I've found that matches the noise I'm having in my truck and the variables described above (trans temp, shifting to auto 4wd). Thanks for any replies. There just isn't much info out there on this problem that some of us are having with our Silverado's.
