2014 Sierra humming noise

Well, after almost a year and half (thread started 11/2013 by Oli4) and engaging with most of you on here. I thought it would be appropriate to tally up the numbers.

After a lot of persistence, many have found a resolution requiring a complete front differential replacement or overall. Let me know if I miss-spoke for anyone.

 

Front Differential complete Replacement:

• gm-guy > 2014 Sierra CC Denali 6.2L 4x4 3.42 gears w/z71 package,

I do not believe that something caused the components within the front differential to go bad. I believe that they were manufactured with error. I believe that it is a manufacturing error within the differential because of the remarkable consistency of the noise, and the speed at which it is audible, that most have reported. I feel that if it was something like a bad CV joint that set up a frequency that took out a differential bearing then some of us wouldnt have been experiencing the issue from "day 1" off of the dealer lot and I believe that the issue we have had would of started out very slight and grown worse and worse / louder and louder more quickly over time. Just my thoughts....

Manufactured? Manufacturing implies a systematic process and some kind of quality control.

I find it interesting that most of the trucks with issues appear to be the higher package trucks like, LTZ, SLT, and Denali. I also find it interesting that most of the trucks listed are crew cabs...same as mine. I do know that the 1/2 ton crew cabs are all assembled in Mexico now. I wouldn't think they have a different front differential assembly part numbers but maybe the differentials for the Mexican assembled trucks are produced and/or purchased from a different facility than those that have the American assembled double cabs. Just thinking out loud here...

Just left the dealership, no fix today. Mechanic seems to think it's the transmission??? I asked what do we do, they stated just drive it until next service and go from there. I told him I disagreed, I thought it felt like it was coming from the front diff, I showed him this thread and he just smiled, I got the feeling that he was making fun of me researching on this forum.

I seen that too, but the 1500 series, including the 6.2L engines, share the same front differential and PN. The more reason about the higher trim packages is that 3 out of 4 trucks (read that in an article) are purchased with higher trim levels.

Can anybody confirm if there is only one company and/manufacturing facility that produces the 1500 series differential assemblies? Maybe there are two different manufacture facilities but both owned by the same company... thus, same part numbers. And as I said before, if most of the trucks that are having the same issue are crew cabs then I am lead to believe that the Mexico assembly plant somehow is at fault or the Mexican assembled trucks (1500 series crew cabs) are receiving parts from a different and possiblly closer, for shipment cost saving, differentials compared to the double or single cab trucks.

TRUCK IS FIXED!!!

 

Dealer replaced entire front differential assembly and the truck is as quiet as a mouse!

 

First picture is of the bad front differential sticker and the second picture is of the new differential. I am not sure what the numbers and letters exactly represent but I thought I might provide them here for reference.

@kylek , yes - see my previous post 65 , heres direct link to it. Its way better then the original though, even tolerable, but yes it did come back , same hum, same speed range etc..

 

@majikgoats - this first 9 digit number is the part number, the last bottom is the UID (unique ID) , the others not so sure. I broke out the numbers, in case others are searching for any components of this tag, it will lead them here.

23186399 > 23484385 = OEM GM Part number (my original and new replacement 1yr later were both 23186399) appears your replacement was an updated one, possibly just to account for 2015 yr model (although its same diff specs), but could be updated/better quality control etc...

9430100000000M > 9430100000000M = same number, not sure what that is

GMC a2132826aacj7745 > TRMF B2143156aaaz0837 = UID, not sure what the GMC / TRMF means though.
