dead battery Again... Ordered an Optima.....

-10 this morning. Truck tried but didn't start. Jumped and ran it to the dealer. Charging system fine. nothing drawing. They said the battery tests ok but it's a 615CCA and they have seen problems with that size battery in my truck in extreme cold. I've even noticed it sounding pretty sickly starting it this winter.

Just bit the bullet and got an optima 34R. dealer tried selling me one for $214 I got it for $170 online. 800/1000. should fix that problem IF that's the problem. either way I've had a Red Top in the past. One Redtop. From 2003-2010. 6 trucks. Still got it in the garage and it will still hold a full charge for a week or so. Not enough to trust it anymore, but still damn impressive.

any thoughts? 615 should be enough for this truck....

To be honest, I've heard lots of naysayers when it comes to the Optimas. I'm curious about them. The battery in my truck is a 550 CCA "Super Start" and is nearing 3 years old. It will only run the radio for 2 hours or so before it's dead. So I'm trying to figure out what to go with for my next battery. I know for sure I want top and side terminals (for easier jumping) and at least 650 CCA.

Ran one in my 2000 for about 6 yrs no issues. I would buy again for sure

I have one in my shop right now I bought it in 2003. I had it in 6 different vehicles continuously from 2003-2010 when I bought my Diesel (that came with 2 brand new batteries). I maintained it more or less for the next 2 years. Now if you charge it up, it will drop to 11.5 within a week. Finally going to core it this week for a $5 O'reilly card. That's enough to sell me on them. that, and the fact that any decent conventional battery is still at least $110, so for $60 I'd rather go with another Optima.

The battery you purchased in "2000" was manufactured in the USA, they have since moved their plant to Mexico, now most claim they produce a cheaper product that does not last as long.

I heard that too....I'm going to give it a shot anyways Mexican Battery in my Mexican built truck doesn't bother me, it's the Mexican battery and Mexican built truck selling for as much as ever while we lost the jobs that does.... However I guess if I wanted to latch onto that I'd be driving a Tundra......

we'll see how long it lasts. if it lasts $60 worth more than the one I got in there now I'm fine...

I don't think it's so much a matter of where the battery is made, but who owns the battery maker. Optima seems to have gone downhill right after Johnson Controls bought them.

I had real good luck with the Red Tops in my race cars that I did not run a charging system on. I would charge them on a float all week and still have 12 voltsish left after a full race night. I have not had good luck with them lasting in a daily use situation. Just my $.02

That's a good piece of information to know.

I put an Optima RedTop 34R in my 2011 a couple weeks ago since the stock battery after 65,000 miles was getting weak on cold starts. I heard all the "horror stories" about Optima's Quality lately, but I'll take the chance(Just about everything these days is down on quality). I've put RedTops in my 2006 Silverado 2500HD Duramax back in the Summer of 2010 and there still working fine. The 2006 would kill either the driver or passenger side battery ever year and a half on the dot. So far over 3 years and 50,000 plus miles, there still holding up. I like the fact their a "dry cell" battery and my 2011 got it's healthy cold cranks back.
