Driveshaft question

I had my truck in for service yesterday and noticed some of the trucks on the lot had what appeared to be an aluminum drive shaft. My truck has a black steel shaft. Did GM change this or did they just change the color?

It just depends on the truck- wheelbase, engine, etc.

That's why I was questioning it. The trucks were the same as mine. Crew cab, Z71, 5.3L, 3:42.

I've seen this on Camaros and Firebirds in the past. Some were shipped with smaller steel driveshafts and others with aluminum. For the most part, the gear ratio and transmission dictated which driveshaft you got, but GM wasn't consistent with it. It have had to do with the parts they had available at the time the vehicle was assembled.
