Silverado LED Radio/HVAC knobs: part #'s & warranty claims

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

Here is the updated information regarding LED Radio/HVAC knobs:

At the beginning of production for the brand new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, the backlighting for the control knobs were not illuminated. There was a running change on the later production vehicles, which resulted in these rings now being illuminated. If you are the owner of one of the early model builds that the knobs do not light up, your vehicle is operating as designed. If you would, however, be interested in installing backlighting for your knobs, I would be happy to assist you. Please private message me referencing this thread if I can be of any assistance.

How did they get the picture in the ad with the led knobs lit up. The picture in the ad had to have been taken before my truck was built. Can't take a picture of something that did not exist.

I take it you work there tbarn? Chad, Ron and the crew have been great!

I sure do. And owning a '14 Silverado helps understand some of the problems here.

Well they wouldn't fix mine so I went ahead and did it my self. I got the radio working but still can't seem to get the hvac one working. Soldered the 2 resistors and still don't work. Did anyone else fix there own and have pics of it or anyone with a good one have pics of the hvac controller with the correct resistors in place.

Anyone with working LED rings on all knobs want to be nice enough to PM me their VIN? My dealership is giving the run around, they did say they would help me, but need to cross reference the part numbers with a VIN that can verify working lights. Lame that we have to go through this in the first place.

ALSO UPDATE: There is a dealer update from GM stating that they should not replace any parts or repair the trucks that dont have working lights, I will upload a scan of the document as well. It also states that all 2014 and newer builds will have the working lights! WTF!! Basically GM is saying that they have corrected the problem going forward but wont help us who have the issue currently.

Wait a minute, they fixed other's trucks, so they should have to fix ours.. They can't fix some people's vehicles and not others.. Other people have confirmed that GM has okay'ed the repairs on theirs... So what gives? This is bull.

Some people lied and said they stopped working.

That is what I told them, but as of Feb 11th, this bulletin from GM is telling the Dealerships to cross reference the VIN to make sure that the truck should have had working LED lights to begin with. So I am basically trying to call their bluff. See the docs attached.

It's BS if you ask me, that they can fix an issue going forward but not take care of people who got caught in the middle.

I said it before I'll say it again. Some dealers will bend over backwards to fix their customers trucks and some are by the freakin book. It's all about which type of dealer you have. I also stated that it was only a matter of time till GM caught on to what people were doing to get their trucks fixed and would put a stop to it. Sorry that's the way it happened. No I don't agree with it. I think it should be fixed.

Yep. Try a different dealer. It was only a matter of time till the GM reps here passed info on about how people were getting it fixed.

I agree, it comes down to how much effort you want to put into getting something done. Something small like these lights are more about principal, its a shame. Main issue is, apparently since this (No replace/repair) bulletin came out, it puts the dealer on the hook for the repair. I will try another dealer nearby to see if they catch it, after that, I'm moving on. Good luck to the rest of you.

To me it's just the principle of the thing. After all, I wouldn't of even noticed if I had not read about it on here and I don't drive much at night. I might not really care if they work or not but it will be pointed out to everyone of my friends or relatives that ride in my truck. Maybe someone should request that the halo lights around the headlight and 4WD knobs be removed so they match the other ones.

Not good enough! Picture ad came with working led. That was taken before my truck was produced! Do the right thing gm! Stop pissing people off and make it right! This is my first gm truck. Might be my last with all these straws adding up!

By the way, didn't we as taxpayers bail these folks out a couple years back. And we get treated like this.

Well I'm glad I got mine fixed early... that's service bulletin is bullshit though. GM should be ashamed of themselves for putting out a bulletin like this. Its obvious that the resistors weren't there and pictures in the brochures show every trim level with them illuminated... It must be digging into their pockets too deep to fix their loyal customers vehicles that clearly were manufactured with a defect. My .02.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
