What to do - possible stolen tires

A couple of months ago I bought a set of brand new Mickey Thompson 33's on Kijiji to replace the set I've got. Paid a reasonable price (about 1500 for the set). When I got home after picking up the tires I came upon some information that lead me to believe that the tires may be stolen but wasn't sure. I had read about the trouble you can get into for posessing stolen property even if you didn't know it was stolen - so I spoke to the police and filled out a report. Obviously if it turns out that the tires are in fact stolen the police will seize them and I'll be out my $1500. It's been a couple of months now and the police still haven't done anything with my report. The tires are sitting in my garage, still brand new, never been mounted. I'm wondering if it would be a crime to mount the tires on my truck and if it turns out that they are stolen, return them at that point? I realize I shouldn't get my legal advice from the internet, but I'm just wondering what people think?

$1500 doesn't exactly sound like a bargain to me, could probably have bought them at a local tire shop for that. Unusually low prices online always raise red flags with me. Its hard to trace stolen merchandise bought online. Especially tires, its not like they have a vin # like a vehicle, essentially one set looks exactly like another set. No way to tell one set from another. I would never have checked up on the tires to begin with so I wouldn't have had to worry about it. In the end, its what you feel comfortable doing. Unfortunately you gave the police too much information already so you made yourself look guilty even though you really did nothing wrong. Sometimes its better not to disclose everything, especially if you only have a hunch about something. That's just my opinion. I think the bigger concern here is that if you believe they were indeed stolen is that they have your credit or debit card number. You trust online sellers not to abuse your personal info but occasionally it happens. I would check my account balance daily if I were you to make sure no unauthorized purchases were made. It might cost you a lot more than $1500.

Yeah I guess so Sarah but what I was saying is that if tires are about the same price, then I would rather buy them locally instead of on the internet. I recently bought new tires for my truck and could have gotten them for a little less buying them online but what I've found is that most tires shops will charge a lot extra to mount them so you don't gain a whole lot. So I found the best price locally and went with that. You also take the chance that the tires could be damaged in shipping and then you have to deal with trying to get the online distributor to fix it. At least is will take a few days to fix it. At worst they won't cooperate and you will have to fight them or just eat the money you spent as they might try to claim it was your fault. And if there is a problem down the road, you don't have a local person to deal with either. You might get a warranty with your online tires but it will be a hassle dealing with it I'm sure. While I was comparing prices at a local shop there was guy looking for 33 inch tires for 20 inch wheels and they were roughly about $1400-$1500 a set out the door so $1500 for tires isn't really that great of a deal online since you still have to get them mounted. I think some of the tires even in 35's were still around $1500. The tires I bought were just under $700 out the door for 285/70/17 by the way which are also 33's. Maybe these Mickey Thompson's are a little more expensive but they the tires he was looking at weren't generic brands either. The internet is great for buying a lot of things for your truck but I think tires shouldn't be bought with the click of a mouse.

I agree on that as well id rather see what I'm buying they could be old warehouse tires. Ya never know.

why did you buy them if you thought they were stolen? Even with that price so close to what they cost new anyway. Since you paid for them and did what you should do, id put them on and run them.

Call the police back and give them your report number and see what's going on and ask them what you should do. Don't ask us ask them.

In the end they're just tires. Would be different if it were a truck that was worth a whole lot more money. This probably isn't a priority for the local police since its not really a local crime. That's probably why you haven't heard back from them, they simply don't care. You filed a report which probably got put on a desk somewhere and most likely got forgotten about or simply discarded. I just don't think they're going to put in the effort to try to figure out if they're stolen and then try to track down some online thief who most likely would never be caught anyway. Like I said in an earlier post, tires don't have a vin # or any clear identification that separates them from another set of tires of the same size other than a receipt saying where you bought them from and date purchased. If say for instance, I had bought a set of the exact same tires how would they tell them apart from your tires? And my tires came from a different seller but simply happened to be exactly the same brand and size. Put both sets next to each other and how would you know which set was which. Without knowing, you would have no idea.

Tires may have serial numbers. The manufacturers may need identification of tire for warranty claims or if a recall. My big trucks tires have serial numbers to keep track of my casings when I have the rears recapped. plowking

Tires DO have dates and lot numbers that can identify them but you'd have to write that info down yourself I don't believe that's on anyones paperwork.
