Why more oil ?

I'd also reckon that increased capacity has something to do with how long the oil change intervals are now. You could go nearly 10,000 miles according to the DIC oil life meter on a single oil change and filter.

 

More oil means it takes longer for it to become contaminated, which extends the oil intervals.

You're only going to get around 7500 miles on the oil life meter. I've changed mine twice, once at just before 3750 miles and it had 51% on the OLM. The second time at 7500, and I forgot to look at the dealership, but I think it was at 50% earlier in the day. Pretty sure it drops 1% every 75 miles in my rig.

it depends on what kind of driving you do, i.e. do you idle a lot, stop and go traffic, city driving, city and highway, or just highway. the computer allegedly takes in to consideration ambient air temp, style of driving, oil temps hours running and such. it then uses some kind of algorithm im sure to calculate the percentage of your oil life. (this is what I was told by dealer I have no other concrete evidence to back this theory, which is why I say allegedly).

Thank you. Exactly. At least that is how it is supposed to work, but for my type of driving it is clicking off 1% for every 75 miles. Maybe the system is not as smart as we think it is, or is portrayed to be? From what I have been reading of others oil changes, the OLM and miles are looking like they are the same as mine. We all obviously don't do the exact same type of driving, in the exact same climate or conditions. In both of my oil changes so far, the meter would have been right on Zero at 7500 miles at the rate it was going, I'm not going to go that long though. Changing it at half that for the first few, then I might stretch it out to 5,000 or so. The 8.5 quart oil capacity, should let us go a little further than a 5 or 6 quart capacity motor.

Thanks for that information. I'm sure the Hour Meter is tied into the equation as well. I had around 120 hours on the first, around another 100 (220 total) on the second. We went through a long cold winter this year as well. Your winters are just a touch milder than ours. LOL Your lift and larger tires probably change things as well? Do you know how many hours you had on the motor when you changed it?

Do you know how many hours you had on the motor when you changed it?

To be honest I did not pay attention to the hour meter when I did the 1st change. I will try to remember to document it on the next so I will have a base for the 3rd oil change.

Changed mine at 5013 and had 37% remaining. I had 75 hours on it at 3000 miles, but I didn't look when I changed the oil.
