My Cold Air solution.

Ok, after hearing about guys putting on a cold air kit complaining about how loud they are I did a little research before I actually purchased my truck. I saw a video on YouTube with Air Raid's kit and something in the installation caught my eye. The Air Raid kit has another inlet coming out of the bottom by the fender. Also Air Raid did not make the MIT kit for just removing the factory baffles on the intake tube and I wasn't going to use one from a 2013 truck and plastic weld a fitting that can break. So here is what I came up with. I ordered a K&N filter to fit the factory air box and an Injen Cold Air kit(aluminum intake tube). Here is what I did step by step.

- removed to cover on factory airbox exposing the OEM filter and lower airbox.

- removed lower air box and made a template to dremel the lower section of factory air box

- removed air horn with foam that goes to fender opening

From there I noticed another opening in both lower airbox but not open on air horn........

- dremeled out air horn which had a matching opening in fender ****MORE COLD AIR*****

- next I dremeled the factory air box

- added 1/2 single sided foam tape to lower fender mount to seal lower airbox to lower fender opening*****MORE COLD AIR******

- I then removed factory intake duct work and test fit the new aluminum intake.

- measured a rough estimate length which I had to shorten again.

Once I had the aluminum intake tube to the right length, I put it all together and tighten all clamps. I started the truck and had no check engine lights......which I heard guys had problems setting off because they moved the factory MAF. My setup maintains factory MAF and airbox, but modifies it so it's not too loud.

Took the truck for a ride and you can tell I removed the factory air intake baffling, but it was no where near annoying at all. Full throttle sounds amazing.

Guys that don't want the air tube, I highly recommend doing the airbox mod by itself with a K&N filter.

So... Even though I am not an aluminum fan.... I REALLY like your setup and that was a pretty decent write up as well. I never got around to ordering the 2013 MIT kit and am thinking now that I'm glad I didn't. Do you have the section you cut off to give me a measurement of tube diameter ID or OD.

Steve, that is the one thing I didn't think of when I cut the tube......write down the measurement of the tube. The only thing that I didn't like about the Injen kit was the tube diameter is smaller than the TB outlet which they have a really nice silicon reducer to make things work. I guess the reason they would have the tube this size was it is a perfect match for the MAF which makes total sense.

I would do a measurement for you today but unfortunately I am stuck at home with a sick 1 year old.....I will try to get the measurements soon. I would do the other airbox mods and the K&N before you order the Injen intake.

Don't sweat it, I was just curious if you had a piece to measure because it looks like a simple straight tube with a 90* on one end and I can order that for $40 and just tig on a couple nipples for PCV lines. From the information found on one of the sites selling that kit, it looks like 3.750 OD/ 3.5 ID (.125 wall) tube so I will see if I can find that size online somewhere and I am pretty sure that I already have silicone hump hose and straight couplers laying around from a previous build. I just wasn't sure if a strait shot/90* would clear alternator but it doesn't look like you are having any issues so... you just opened another possible door for a custom intake. good job on the airbox also.

edit...6.2 must have a bigger TB than 5.3 because My TB and MAF seem to be the same size.

Looks nice. But I have to think having that extra big hole on the bottom of the airbox will now lead to filters getting dirtier faster. Where does that hole lead to?

That leads to the front inner fender well, not exposed to elements.....the filter will most likely get dirtier faster but that's the same thing that wil happen with an open element filter on an Air Raid, Volant, or K&N kit. Plain and simple, it gets more air into the filter instead of a hole that was only 6x8 max now has an extra 2x4 and 4x8 opening to help.

Gotcha, well that's better. I did something similar on my 2011 F150. But didnt cut anything. Just made air get to the airbox better.

Let us know if you noticed any performance or mileage increases. Although without any real data logging everything is just gonna be "seat of the pants" lol

Overall I still really like the intake tube. Cleans up the engine bay considerably.

Just being curious, but what is the part number for the intake tube? I was looking at doing that very same thing.

I was under the impression that he bought the complete CAI system for the 2014 5.3 silverado, PF7064P (polished) PF7064WB (wrinkle finish black)

Yes, purchased the kit, not just the intake tube.....

I bought the injen kit as well, installed as is for now, I was planning on doing this mod if the noise was too much for me, thanks for the info.

It looks like I was able to double the size of the opening into the fender. Acceleration seems snappier and
it's a bit louder under acceleration. I would say the intake drone is now at the same decibel level as the factory exhaust. It's still significantly quieter than an open element CAI.

Nice. Any mileage improvements now that you have been using it like that for a while?

with the window down it's a tiny bit louder under acceleration.

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
