What brand oil do you use?

I'm about to change mine out in the next few days and I think I'll go with the same castrol 10w30. Cold weather ticking was minimal this past winter, and it'll also be comforting to know that she'll have new oil for the hottest months of the year.

This oil is up to 6k miles but with the last 2k being from two road trips in the span of one month.

I got tired of guesswork so getting the oil analysises done is worth it for me. I'm running double the interval I previously was at slightly less cost, with the added benefit of knowing everything about the oil coming out of the motor. That said the 5w-30 regular synthetic from M1 is fully capable of 10k intervals from what I've seen so far.

I Have been wanting to get an oil analysis done for years now but in all honesty I'm very scared of what they'll tell me. I.e. "your engine is about to dead itself any mile now"

While I do play with extending drains and such with my commercial stuff, I like to just take it to just under 10% on the OLM on my pickup, which plays out to around 7500 miles, give or take. Engine uses about a 1/4 of a quart in that time frame. Oil could probably go longer, but really not concerned enough to try. It is only a measly 6 quarts. I go thru drums of engine oil in my commercial stuff in a year. I go thru about a case for my pickup in a year.... $67 in oil. Hardly seems worth trying to jump on the extending drain oil bandwagon, so the OLM interval is fine with me. The Schaeffer 9003D 5w30 full synthetic I use does a real fine job.

On my stuff that's under warranty I take it in and let them do it. After the trailblazer SS with their extended drain with Mobil one, that's all I needed and the best filter I can get.

That 10w30 should be fine year round since you are in Arizona. I sure wouldn't recommend it for Minnesota year round though. :) That is the beauty of all of this. There are a lot of very good oils, with new varieties cropping up each day. I have been reading a lot about the Shell GTL (natural gas to oil) products that are available retail now under the Pennzoil label. Very promising stuff and seem worth considering. The pricing is right in line with other synthetics on the shelf.

I was thinking about dropping down to 5w-30 in the winter. Lows can be in the 30-40's here in town and I venture to colder regions a few times throughout.

Thoughts?

Just run the 5w30 year round and rest easy. 5w30 or 10w30 are both 30w oils. Only difference is winter flow rate. At operating temps they are the same viscosity.

I prefer Pennzoil Ultra oil and AC Delco oil filters.

While i don't use the PU, it is a real killer oil for sure. That is a good choice. If I wasn't using what I am now, I would seriously consider the PU.

Yeah, I buy 9003 by the 5-gallon bucket, and buy nearly $400 at a time for the free freight. When I was going through gallons per change I was going through a lot of oil. Now not so much, but I'm still running almost every thing I have on Schaefer.

Unfortunately, the prepaid sample I collected from the truck last month has been lost in the mail. Lost on that deal both ways...sample was the first for Schaefer in this truck and I lost that $ on the prepaid deal. So needless to say, I won't be using their analytical services any more...back to Blackstone.

I buy enough Schaeffer product that they give me free oil sample analysis kits and free analysis results. Happens that way when one buys drums of the stuff like I do for my business. One of the reasons I use their products. They work well for me, they ship 'em to me for free, and they run my oils analysis for free for me. Doesn't get a whole lot better than that. Just taking advantage of the situation. Sometimes they even give me product for free. Occasionally they will have something like a free case of grease with a 55 drum order. I am just about to put in my semi annual order with them, need to check on that.
