Hey, I have a 2014 silverado LT z71, love the truck, but have a question. Seems about every 200 miles I get a service 4wd message on the dash. I have a service appointment next week to look at that, and for the recall about 4wd going into neutral. Has any other members had a service 4wd message on there dash, and what was the fix? Thanks and happy 4th

Had one right after they did the transfer case recall. It came on after getting above 35 mph and would not reset. They reflashed the recall software and haven't seen it since. Maybe the recall will fix your problem?

Hello skeeterzx

My apologies to hear that you have concerns with your service message for the 4WD frequently reappearing. Have you mentioned this to your dealership previously? Please keep us updated on what your dealership says!

Best,

Andraya

Was able to get to the dealer today to have 4wd drive message looked at and to do the two recalls. The tech called me and said they could not duplicate the problem, but it did show a code where it has been happen, he didn't think the reflash of the transfer case recall would fix the problem since the code was still stored afterwards, but he said to drive it and see, and bring it back if it happens again. I will talk to the tech when I pick my truck up in the morning. Hope they can get it worked out, going to OBX at the end of the month and will be using 4wd on the beach.

Dropped truck off at the dealer again today for the same problem. The tech called me and said they were gonna keep my truck a few days and try and track the codes that have been stored. He did say they were gonna crack my transfer case open :( and see if they can see something in there. Other than that the truck is perfect and the dealer is good, just hate to have to keep taking my truck back to have it looked at.

I have exactly the same problem !!!!!! Everything was fine until I got the recall notice, had the software update for the so called "Transfer case shifting into neutral" notice.

The very next day the "Service 4 wheel drive messages" started. I can dismiss the message but every few days it reappears. The four wheel drive seems to work fine so I'm not going back to the garage again so they can screw something else up.

The truck only has 800 miles on it so I'm going to wait until I accumulate 3 or 4 more recalls so I can get everything done at the same time. I've already gone through 2 recalls and that's enough for now. I have other things to do besides wasting time at the dealers.

I'm getting the same message and I only have 800 miles on the truck so I don't really want them taking it apart unless they are sure of the problem. I just keep dismissing the message until someone realizes that it's probably a software glitch because everything was fine until they flashed the module during the latest recall campaign.

Just got my truck back from dealer today, tech said it was throwing code c0392, gm tech services had them drive it 150 miles in auto 4wd to set the transfer case clutches, I really doubt that's the problem as I have used 4wd on the beach before so they should have been set. I get the service message every 100-200 miles, so we will see what happens.

Other than the "Service 4 wheel drive message" is the truck able to operate in both auto and 4 wheel drive ?

Poster Chuck mentioned that he had the same problem and it was solved by reflashing the software so that's why I'm going to wait a while before bringing it back to the dealer. Once enough owners experience the same problem GM may know what to do. It's too much of a coincidence that a few of us are having the exact same problem.

It won't shift into 4wd when the light is on, but if I cut off the engine and wait 10 mins, crank back up and shifts into 4wd fine.

That's exactly what mine does.

If I try to shift it into auto or 4 Hi while the message "Service 4 wheel drive" is showing, nothing works. I then have to dismiss the message, turn the engine off, wait 10 or 20 mins for everything to reset and it runs fine for a few days until I get the message again.

But...... if I simply dismiss the message as soon as it appears, everything works just fine.

And to think that everything was working well until I brought it in for the recall is what really upsets me. Somehow they managed to screw something up that was probably ok in the first place.

Hey guys... ask your tech how many of this recall the dealership has completed. The reason I say this is that the technician that did mine revealed that he missed one of the final steps and it caused this problem. If they don't follow the tech bulletin verbatim it can cause this problem... good luck!

Thanks for the heads up but at my dealership the only person that you have any contact with is the "service advisor" behind the counter in the garage area. This person writes down the details, fills out the work order and passes it on to the technician. Now for me to suggest to them that perhaps somehow through their own incompetence they managed to muck up a perfectly good truck would be a bit of a hassle.

I have a 5 year warranty with roadside assistance so if the 4 wheel drive ever does leave me stranded I'll simply phone and have them come for the truck.

I'm definitely not going back to the dealer and have them rip out the transmission (as they suggested to skeeter) looking for a defect that most likely does not exist.

Meanwhile it only takes a second to ignore & dismiss the message.

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
