Holy crap. Everyone is telling me the dyno guys may have botched the dyno, and want me to take it to an American specialty shop with a dyno, which don't exist in Northeast OK.

 

have a guy who makes cams for $100 million race teams saying my cam "is an abortion" to the engine.

 

I have the performance guys on The Camaro site saying its weak valve springs, or msd box.

 

I have a pontiac site telling me the can is just fine for the car, my car just makes 100+ HP less than any comparable motor, so something is wrong, and they give me advice without actually giving me advice, telling me to "sort it out" and "find out what's wrong". Thats what I'm trying to do. If I'm lucky maybe someone will offer take this stupid Pontiac motor off my hands.

Well here's one more take it to the track see how it runs there. If you like the way it feels then chill and have fun with it.

I would dyno it again before you go buying cams. I still don't think cam is your issue. Again, only possibility I see there is if you running a hydraulic cam.

The Cam guy is saying its choking on exhaust, andI have too much head airflow, that I need a minimum of 16 degree split at .050. Thing is, this article, same top end, but bigger valves for MORE airflow, cam has LESS split than I have now, and even more lift.

Back to the plug wires. I ordered a new coil wire. I know that one spark wire needs to be replaced, but a replacement is $20. Another wire is 2x the resistance of the other 6 good ones, it still has "good" stats, still way better than most wires. I'm thinking I should just buy a new set amyway? ($82.50 eBay) these wires aren't fresh.

I may certainly be wrong, but I just don't see the cam causing that erratic pattern. Certainly a steep power drop, but unless it's floating the valves I don't see it causing that.

 

How big of carb are you running?

 

Have you joined speedtalk yet? I have yet to find a more knowledgable site when it comes to horsepower.

Already ordered all the wires. Going with MSD Super Conductors, had them before and everything else is MSD so makes sense to me. The only general consensus (besides the dyno could have been botched) is the valve springs are too weak for the cam. Talked yesterday to my bro's in-law that had a RoadRunner drag car and he thought they are light for a 710 lift. Another question is if those are the springs I have, that is the receipt I have, and I believe they are because the rockers on the receipt are what I have, the Harland Sharp's are a unique color.

 

THESE ARE 225LBS @ 1.950 AND 660LBS @ 1.250 MAX LIFT .750

But, this would say they are okay if you bread recommends pressures for solid Roller cams:

GOOD NEWS: just got some input from a guy with a lot of dyno experience. Sound like the car overwhelmed the operator

your sheet with the dyno curve graph, it looks like just a little tire slip, and then was throttled down! Its a good looking run! Nice power!!!

 

Once any torque convertor reaches 1to1 or brake Stall (yours is 3500 stall) there is no slippage or wasted HP) unless your flash stall is much higher, but at your peak torque you would not be slipping any more (using more HP) ! But the turbo 400 does have more drag on an engine then a smaller trans. 479 HP + your HP loss through the chassis and car wght depending on tire size will put you closer to 700 HP!

 

So, what really stinks, is the graphs first dip is before peak power, then peak, then throttle down. So who knows what would happen if he had kept on it. Maybe it would have made even more.

Did nothing specifically with the car, but did make arrangements for someone to cover me at the clinic so I can race on Sept 27. Going to a heads up street car race in Ardmore.

 

 

I haven't ran it since May 18th. Getting a little antsy.

Yes sir.

 

Full interior, tagged, inspected, and driven to get groceries on a frequent basis.

 

I'm running a TH350 with 3.50 gears and I'm running a 275/60/15 drag radial. So, it actually goes down the highway nicely too.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
