Dont know how accurate this is in determining if the truck will buffet or not, but after driving my truck for about 2 years and over 15K miles with no issues, I went out and watched the roof while closing the door; no movement in the headliner.

My roof jumps like crazy, too. And mine buffets like crazy, too. But, for what it's worth, I've done the same check on numerous other SUVs that don't buffet and they all bounce as well, including an '09 Explorer, a '10 Explorer, and an '09 Trailblazer. The Trailblazer was the worst by far! Way worse than even my Yukon. And, quiet as can be inside. So, not sure the "roof bounce" test alone is the indicator.

The roof pops up in the 2015i Suburban I'm in when I close one door. It buffets at 60kph and worse at 120kph.

My friends 2014 Tahoe has the same roof movement when closing the door, but does not buffet at any speed.

I just compared them side by side in the driveway.

There is just something about these vehicles that cannot be figured out. Even the GM field engineer has tried everything and they gave up. Said we got what we got and it won't be fixed until 2018. Not sure where he got the 2018 figure from but that's what we were told.

 

Sounding more and more like a design flaw that can't and won't be fixed until a model refresh in 2018. Everything GM is throwing at the problem right now is just BS.

My roof jumps like a pop-up tent when closing door. My '11 grand cherokee overland doesn't move one bit and feels rock solid.

 

However, I got my hands on a brand new set of 20" sierra wheels and tires off of a 2016 with less than 500 miles (sierra was silky smooth prior to removing wheels/tires) and it made a huge difference in ride and reduced the buffeting quite a bit. The buffeting is still there between 40-60mph but I will say that on our 2hr trip this weekend, the truck was very tolerable to almost comfortable cruising at 75mph. I am hoping with quality 20" tires and cabin dnyamatted as well as the roof TSB that it will be greatly improved.

 

I also compared our XL to a family members this weekend and his did not flex nearly as much when closing door and was also much more solid when doing the "hit test" which tells me his roof bows are probably attached. His is one of the first 15s to roll of the line and he's not noticed any buffeting. I can a little but it's nothing compared to our 15 XL.

Crazy good update, I have almost no more booms and buffets. For me, further reducing unsprung weight was the fix.

 

It's weird driving, I was used to the 1-2 punch of feeling the actual shudder in the seat before I felt the issue with my ears. Now no more.

 

I already followed Austin's advice on getting the most sidewall on a smaller rim with a demanding road force balance, and I was very happy how much it helped.

 

Thought about unsprung weight , so I went further and swapped for a forged wheel. In the end, I saved about 20lbs per corner or almost 25%. The rim swap actually saved more, but then I added an off road tire, which at 55lbs is significantly heavier than a street tire.

At work we have three generations of Suburbans on the property going back to the chrome-bumpered 2000-2006 models. Today I closed the doors on one of each and all three roofs jumped so as stated above, this may not be a definitive test. Also, they haven't had any complaints about the newest one.

No, Do not worrk for GM. Dealer we bought from is 200 miles from the Arlington Plant.

I think they have fixed it in the manufacturing process (hence the reason the LTZ manufactured in 1/7/2015 does not have the issue), but I don't think they have figured out a fix for the vehicles currently on the road, as my guess there is more than one component causing the buffeting. "

 

We'll see. I find it surprising your vehicle was built on the 7th and you took delivery on the 12th. In other words, built on Wednesday and you have it on Monday. You must be pretty close to Arlington or work for GM for that to happen. My third was built on the 8th. I believe it is currently in Neverland in a galaxy far, far away). It will be interesting to see if there are any apparent differences between them.

Wanted to give an update. We now have 23,000 miles on the LTZ and have not had any of the issues we had with LT. Still drives like a dream!

 

Well our ordeal is OVER!!! To recapwe had a 2015 Chevy Suburban LT with a manufacture date of 8/14. We had two main issues with ours: Severe Vibration at all speeds and the buffeting (to the point I have had several ear infections, kids have thrown up in the car and headaches on long trips). After having it in and out of the dealers service center 8 times they called in a GM Engineer.

 

When meeting with the GM Engineer we found out some very interesting things. 1) the vibration is the same vibration that they were having with the newly designed 2014 pick-ups and we were told that there has recently been a change in the manufacturing process to eliminate the vibration. 2) They believed the buffeting was coming from behind the sunroof, and having to do with the cross bar supports coming undone. He stated that some things had been changed in manufacturing process to eliminate the buffeting issue. He told us that he has a machine that they can hook up on the inside of the car that will measure the "buffeting"/pressure. If we did have the buffeting then they suggested the fix of taking the headliner down, sunroof out, and epoxying/gluing the cross beams back to the roof. (FYIthey don't cut the top of the car off as others have stated.) After speaking a while longer we left the car with the GM Engineer for the day.

 

Shortly after we left, We get a call and were told that upon the test drive that the GM Engineer could feel/hear the buffeting without having to hook up the device they use to measure the buffeting. And that ours was one of the worse cases that he had heard. Upon discussion with our Service MAnager and GM Engineer they recommended the fix of taking out the sunroof. We were hesitant but were told that we had to at least give GM the chance to try their fix. We agreed. We received a text from our Service MAnager that stated that there was a "gap" that was bigger than it was suppose to be. After two days we get it back, and of course the buffeting & Vibration was still there. We told them we wanted a new car or we would sue/file lemon law.

 

At this point our dealer was willing to do anything to make us happy. We told them we wanted another Suburban because it is the only vehicle that could accommodate our family. And after speaking with the GM Engineer about their being changes in the Manufacturing process, we had hopes the issue on a new one would be fixed. After some back and fourth, GM finally bought back the LT for what we paid for it, and we purchased a 2015 Chevy Suburban LTZ that was manufactured in January 2015. It was manufactured 1/7 and we picked it up on 1/12. We drove it around for 3 days There was no Vibration and No buffeting at all. We have driven it 700 miles home and have roughly put another 600 miles more on it. There is still no buffeting and no vibration at all. It drives like a dream!!!!!

 

I will also add that there is no "low hum" in the LTZ when it is in V4 mode either, like their was with the LT. With the LT you could feel and hear when the vehicle went back and fourth between V4 and V8. With our LTZ the switch is so quiet and subtle, that you cannot tell if it is in V4 or V8 unless you look at the dash.

 

We are very thankful that our dealer was so involved. They were the ones that made the GM Engineer come out to try to fix the vehicle and they are the ones that went to bat for us and got GM to pony up the money to purchase the vehicle back. We would not have gotten the results that we had, if it had not been for our dealer.

 

I would also like to make a comment about the post on here about it being the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation). The LT did not have the ANC yet we still had the buffeting issue. The ANC does not come standard on the LTZ it is something that has to be added. The LTZ we have now does not have the ANC either. So I am not sure that the ANC is the whole problem. I would think if there is a "gap that shouldn't be there" behind the sunroof that could possibly be letting air in, that this may effect your ANC trying to compensate for the problem, making the buffeting worse. Just a thought.

Great news, and I know your original post was from almost a year ago, but nothing is 'fixed' yet in manufacturing

 

I drove lots of 16s, some vibrated and almost all of them boomed/buffeted

Right now on Chevy's website, they are offering what they call a 'Factory Reduction Below MSRP' rebate of $5478.00 when you use the 'Build & Price' tool. (This is on 2016 Suburbans) I wonder if this is tied into the problems they've been having?

I haven't read any cases with the issue that had aftermarket exhaust. Most of these trucks are just days new off the lot with low miles.
