Salesman riding with on a test drive?

I am so surprise by all these posts. I have never been on a test drive without a salesguy! I have also never been on a several hours long extended test drive.They usually have a preferred route aroudn the dealership, trying to hit some side streets and may be up one exit on the highway and back. Unless the dealer has some loaner vehicles, you can't put many miles on during a test drive or the vehicle is no longer considered new...

They are new till they are titled, Ive bought some new trucks with 6k on the odo before with the discounts of course.

I've bought a lot of cars/trucks over the years. It really doesn't matter to me if they ride along or not, just never had a sales person ask or tell me it was their policy. Asked the wife if she could ever remember a sales person riding along...she said they always give me the keys and say, "see you later". My son bought a used Silverado recently from a dealer and they did the same thing - I went along and enjoyed his 2 hour test drive! No sales person along.

 

The other point that I was trying to make earlier was that this '14 was so new when I bought it that the sales guy didn't know the differences between older models and the '14, so I was "educating" him. Service manager had just gotten "certified" as well, so we had some interesting chats. I enjoyed the discussions with these guys since we were all learning...

 

So, I guess it just depends on the dealer...

Maybe I was mistaken, but I thought I remembered that there was a mileage limit over which a new car was no longer "new". Maybe state by state variances? or maybe I'm just wrong...haha

 

In any case, I thought of a reson why I would want a salesman to always ride along, it will help keep people from abusing the vehicle on the test drive, then bringing it back, to be sold to some unsuspecting individual....

Ive bought a couple demos and head sales peoples rides, 6000 miles seems to be the cut off point. And not being titled.

When you guy's sell a vehicle outright, Do you just look at the potential buy's ID and let him or her take your car ? I have been on test rides with and without the sales person and I am good either way but I can understand if they don't trust the public enough to let em leave in a brand new ride. JMHO

There has been only a couple of times I've been allowed to overnight test drive a vehicle and a few more times that I've taken a vehicle out without a salesman. Typically they like to ride with me to explain all the features and options and blah, blah, blah. I guess to ensure they get a sale for their commission. I don't really care either way as long as they let me drive the vehicle my way so I know I like it. Only exception was one time the salesman would not let me drive the vehicle at all due to "insurance issues" so once I told him there is no chance of me buying the vehicle did he let me drive it....briefly....I didn't buy it.
