It's more to do with tire ratings than weight of the vehicle. 111S tire has rating of 112mph. Most manufactures will give an extra leeway by governing the speed even less. My truck weight is approximately 5300lbs, btw. I'm not looking to get stupid, just thinking I might not clear the 1/4 without bumping governer... I wanted to at least get a completely stock run in then maybe one at a later date after a couple mods.

Speed rated tires are fairly new, in the 70s 80s there wasn't any speed limiters on cars and trucks. Cars were heaver than trucks back then, the Caddys Buicks Impalas could easily pass the speed ratings of most tires of today. Cant remember hearing too much about tire blowouts do to high speeds back then. Tire where pretty crude back then too and small.

Chris's story about his brother is not only entertaining, But also seems to add evidence to the possibility of the driveshaft going through its natural harmonic speed.

 

Decades ago I was in the nuclear business. We were making gaseous uranium enrichment centrifuges which are relatively long tubes vs their diameter and spin fast. Spinning structures go thru a wobbling at certain speeds which are known as "critical speeds" or just "criticals". Changing the stiffness or length will Chang the speed at which the critical occurs. It's important that any rotating structure that operates in or beyond a critical be strong enough to take the extra loads induced by the wobbling/critical.

 

The nature of a critical is that the wobbling diminishes as speed is increased or decreased. As a rotating structure is spun faster the wobbling goes away, but at some higher speed it will encounter another critical which puts two bends in the structure.

Update: the dealership has not checked for a tune yet miraculously and are fixing everything under warranty at this time. Not saying I condone this activity as I don't but the driveshaft should not fly apart at that speed. The factory governor was set at 105 and you would think they would test them to more than that. Might be the reason they haven't looked yet.

I don't know who some people are trying to kill but I think 100mph (~160km/h) is pretty fast for a truck. Tire ratings or not.

The speeds in the on the interstates in the west average 85MPH just to flow with the traffic. There are some roads in the deserts that are faster. Im older and wiser so im happy at 70 but I like to know if need to go faster the driveshaft is balance to handle it. Im old enough to remember speed out west where fast as you dare. The old heavy cars didn't seem to have any problem doing 120 plus on the tires back then. That only changed do to the made up oil crises of the late 70s and the dreaded double nickel. People would die driving 55, being so bored they fall asleep.

If it's a harmonic issue, the shaft could be running perfectly smooth and then suddenly go into high vibration a little bit faster. It's a reliable/repeatable phenomena.

I told him if he is going to run it like this to get one built to handle it. He is going back with factory but the guys that did my rear end at clutch and driveshaft will build him one from scratch to handle whatever he is going to do. If warranty would have been declined he would have went that route but since they didn't he is sticking with what they give him. I told him to atleast go have it checked there anyway before doing that again; he was lucky that he didn't hurt himself or anyone else.
