What are good 4L60e tips for long life?

my 85 diesel 'burb ,,,i put in a SRTA and pounded the guts out of it and when i crushed the body ,i stole the 3-4 clutch out of it and it was brand new inside ,,,,

 

i rebuilt a few (more than a few )as well

I installed a transgo hd2 kit and pinless pistons along with aluminum pistons to replace the plastic ones. Also installed the corvette servo and one transgo shim on the cover to tighten the band. Also installed a new separator plate and replaced the steel check balls with plastic ones that don't make holes in the plate. Last but not least a tru cool 40k cooler and hd servo from sonax.

Old thread but I figure id give you guys a laugh. I have a 2000 suburban with a 4l60e. It has 200,000 miles, bone stock, lots of towing and still on original fluid. It still gets it done!

I am with servamtsalesman, I have 194,458 on my truck, 36,000 with tune and vette servo. I'll probably be asking for trouble since I put 315/70r17 on the stock 373 gear but truck doesn't seem to have an issue with them at the moment. The guy who tuned my truck said I was lucky. He has never seen 700r4/4l60e last that long. He said the hardest thing on the trans is the 4th to 2nd down shift at highway speeds. Heavy truck, plus highway speed, plus the trans having to unlock and re lock the band causes a lot of stress on the trans that is meant for 3500lb car. My dad's truck has 192,000 on completely stock truck he ordered new in 04. He is rough on it and so was I (learned how to drive on that truck) and she is still running strong.

 

And with the tune, I mean dyno tuned. Eight 3rd gear pulls to 5800 rpm or 130mph. That was at 150k miles on the drivetrain.

It has 200,000 miles, bone stock, lots of towing and still on original fluid.

 

And I thought I was hard core...

310,000 miles on my 4L60E.... only changed the fluid and filter twice.

You want to make it last forever and if its perfect now, do a transgo Jr kit ($37) ebay,do a transgo seperator plate ($20) approx. vette servo $15 ebay.

 

The VB converter lock up valve bore wears out and you get a 1870 code and it goes into limp mode until you restart it.Almost every tranny shop wants to rebuild when when they may not need it.

 

VB Sep. plate gets worn out check balls beat them up and will stuck into a plate and cause burn up.

 

transgo kit jr. comes with correction repalcement converter apply valve plus a dozen other mods that make them work bitchn.Servo holds the band tighter.A good tranny guy can install that kit in 2-2.5 hours,so if you find a shop that doesnt want to over charge you for there labor and you supply the parts along with filter and gasket.You will have it made.....Aux cooler is good too.

What's the TransGo JR part number for the 4L60E? I bought one but it's for the 4T60E. (my mistake, I searched for Transgo Jr 4L60E on eBay). There is no kit under 4L60E that mentions "Jr". Also what's the part number for the Transgo Seperator Plate mentioned? All of this sounds like cheap insurance and improvements in driveability. I can't stand torque management either - got to get some performance parts to justify an ECU tune.. (*Bear??)

 

My truck has *always* had a rough 1-2 shift. While it's got only 29K on it, I haven't changed the A/T fluid/filter for 4 years where it basically sat. I'm now doing all control arms, bushings, shocks, tie rods and fluids.

 

Now, I'm still looking for a good transmission shop in the Western, MA area. If anyone knows of a reputable place, please drop a line.

Mine has a long life in the garage lol my tip: get a 4L80E when this one goes. Don't waste money on "performance" transmissions, I did and made it another 6 months before it went out again. Currently in the process of finding time to yank it out and send it in for warranty work

Or get a performance 4L80! :)

You guys are suggusting a swap that isnt for the casual shadetree mechanic. A 60 for another 60 series is a straightforward swap. Going to an 80 is more in depth and requires a new converter, crossmember, output shaft, wiring, and driveshaft.

What kind of wiring? I thought as far as electronics go it just had to be programmed for the 80e

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
