Rear Seat Headrests

Recommended Posts

I've had my Denali 6.2L since January and am very happy with the truck except for one area...the rear seat headrests are far too low! I have two teenage kids and am just not comfortable that they sufficiently safe with those ridiculously low headrests. At first I considered ordering another pair of front headrests but the posts in the front are different from the back. I've looked for aftermarket and cannot find anything.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you.

I thought so too, and they don't really lock in the up position like the fronts. Could you cut additional notches in the posts?

I agree there seems to be a safety issue here that GM will need to address. You don't have to be tall, I'm 5 10 and the headrests don't go up nearly enough to protect your noggin from the rear window if you were to be rear ended. You'd break the window with your head for sure.

Yea they're very easy to push back down and don't even go up that far. For a pickup truck made to haul a crew of people working (not the case all the time I know) the headrests don't go up that far.

Thanks for the responses. I forgot to mention in my original post that mine also basically drop back down just by placing your hand on them. Because this is a serious safety concern I have sent my concerns to GM to see what can offer as a solution. I will update.

Thanks again.

There is no law stating the requirement that rear seats have headrests. However, many auto manufacturers voluntarily do to some degree, but not all. Most, if any, leave out the middle headrest as a visibility issue, also. This is also reasoning why the outboard headrests, if equipped, only go so high.

Has anyone found a solution for the small rear headrest. I really want to love my truck but can't because I'm always worried about the kids in the back.

Thats the first thing I noticed when I purchased my gmc that the rear headrest where much smaller than the other 3 manufactures. I would say they are at least 3 times smaller and they do not lock up very tight at all. It would be good for the rear seat passengers to have some protection behind there heads instead of glass. Think they made them small for the driver to have a good view out the back. I agree they should be larger and also would make it look nicer too. Just my 2 cents worth.

They are tiny. Whats worse is they don't go much higher than 3" up. It works for now b/c my kids are little but when they get bigger it will be a safety issue. My 10 year old is now maxing out the headrest height!

I had the same concerns as you when I bought my truck....here's some data to mull over. In short: The back window is close enough to the head to act as a head restraint and prevent whiplash injury. The small headrest is there for people not quite tall enough to use the window effectively. Not saying it is comfortable...but the data says it is safe.

I would rather my head or my families if it had to, hit a padded head rest and not hard glass. Its just common since I think thats why Ford, Toyota and Ram do it. Sounds like Chevy is trying to save the dollar.
