how is average mpg calculation done on the WT versions?

I have the basic black and white small 2" x 3" dash display so no v8/v4 thingy and no mileage scale or ability to select 25 or 50 mile average mpg calculation so can anyone tell me for certain what the reading is based on? I assume its going to be either the last 25 or 50 miles traveled but who knows.

all I see is average mpg but what does that mean? it started at 19.4 mpg and has steadily gone down since and after 4 tanks of gas I am down to 17.8 mpg now so is this based on the last 25? 50? or 100 miles traveled? becausre I have bno clue but at this rate im going to be at 16 mpg on the next tank of gas

Should be in line with your current amount of miles on the truck. If you reset the average at every fill up, it would then be the MPG per tank of fuel. If you keep it the way it is, it would become the life of the vehicle average.

It's not based on a fixed value. It's based on fuel use vs miles driven since last reset. So if you reset it and drive like a grandpa you'll get high numbers. Reset it and thrash the truck and they'll be low.

ok so it doesn't update itself, I have to manually reset it myself.

ok that makes sense now but it doesn't explain why my mileages suck, at the rate its going down I must be getting 12 mpg and I do drive like a grampa. in fact I drive like a grampa with nowhere to go, im that guy everybody has to pass.

but the 4 times the service dept had it trying to fix the vibration they put 300 of the 900 total miles on my truck so maybe its them driving stupid with a heavy foot

I will have to reset it and see what I get now

thanks for the education guys

Do the math yourself after each fill up for true mpg, my true mpg vs what the truck says is a few mpg off with the truck showing higher.

Even with the mileage display on my truck, I still use the manual method mentioned already. Start a new trip at fill-up and the next time you fill-up, take the miles driven and divide by what you just put in to fill it up again.
