I'm talking about if I was to put one in my truck with the gears I have now. I have 3.42s.

So you have a half ton, really no need for all the weight and low end torque of a 8.1 when a 5.3/6.0/6.2 weights a lot less and is capable of making a lot more USEABLE power not to mention would get better mileage.

Very true that the 8.1 is a heavy ass pig. Even the 7.4 is heavy, little less power but came with forged pistons and crank plus multi port fuel injection and something about the coil pack, can't remember.

A new 5.3 or even the 6.2 are too expensive if something catastrophic was to occur. So I guess the 6.0 would be my next engine if something was to happen. There are quite a few variations of the 6.0 from what I've read on Wikipedia and honestly the information is pretty reassuring. Tons of vehicles came with the 6.0 plus there are aluminum block versions. I like the 6200 vortec so at least I'll be in the 400+hp/tq range.

Junkyard 6.0, cam, tune, headers, 400+ hp easy.

Keep in mind the 4.8/5.3/6.0/6.2 are all the same block and weight the same.

Iron block 6.0 is low compression and good for boost, 6.2 is high compression and good for big cam. All are tough and fun.

Yes but some 6.0's came with aluminum blocks. I would love the 6.2 with a nice cam. Avoid the hassle of a force induction kit and just have all around everyday fun. The vortec 6200 was primarily meant for SUVs and did come in Silverados from 2009-2013.

I wonder, out of curiosity how the 6.0 would be in regards to mpgs in my 2WD doublecab ? Heard they're notoriously bad on gas. I drive a distance to and from work but thankfully it's all highway miles. I live in Miami, FL and work in Homestead which is quite literally the last town before heading down to the FL. Keys. I live right next to the extension that puts me on the turnpike and I'm there in 25mins easily because I go against traffic to and from work. Mon-Fri it's easily a 300 mile trip not including whatever driving I do during working hours. This doesn't include any weekend driving at all.

What about LS engines with a truck style intake manifold and a truck cam... What would work? I would like to keep it an aluminum block unless the options are for a big block as per the previous posts.

I've pulled 18mpg out of mine with 3.73s and a 4x4 2500hd. I could see 20mpg+ pretty easy out of a lighter 1500 with even higher gearing and 2wd.

Now that's what I'm talking about. I've recently taken off my tonneau cover, removed my spare tire and finally removed my tailgate. I've recently purchased a tailgate cargo net and I've seen even better mpgs than before with everything else on. Easily another 2 mpgs. I'm getting very high 20s-30s on the highway with the stock tune also.

Correct but I was trying to say the iron block 6.0 is good for boost as it is a lower compression motor and known for being stronger then the aluminum block.

They also made 6.0's with both cast and aluminum heads.

BTF the 6.2 was available in '08

I do understand what you are saying, wanting to stay N/A high compression and lightweight is your answer.

Ya I'm not interested in boosting my truck, never have been. Just have good supporting bolt-on's, a good tune with a good suspension setup and I'm happy. I want to keep her for as long as possible.

Not all 6.0's are created equal. The 2500HD 6.0's are thirsty because of the big, heavy trucks they move around. I had 2 different 6.0 Vortec Max 1500 trucks, and they returned very similar mileage to my other 5.3 trucks....especially if I kept my foot out of them.

This is my exact thinking. Plus my truck isn't a 4x4 so there's gas savings right there.

Yeah that's true too. I think you could get pretty decent mileage out of a properly tuned 6.0....and sensible driving.

I drive about 30-40 highway miles every day, and I get about 11-12 mpg during those trips. I drive between 60 and 70 mph. I also have 35in tires, so that takes away, but those are real numbers
