6.0 gas engine

Sucks that the Vortec 8100 is such a gas guzzler. I've seen several for sale down here in South Florida.

I'm in central Florida, send some clean ones my way!

All the ones I have seen have 250,000 miles and are trashed.

I think gm has proven with the 6.0 that numbers don't mean a hell of alot nowadays. In a way it's the law of diminishing returns, keep bumping numbers but not really getting anywhere. The 6.0 still runs with the big dogs and outperforms and outlasts them. A diesel will out tow it sure, but I think the average consumer today is buying a diesel hoping for the pre emissions glory..when a gasser would be just fine.

The TFL Eisenhower test is all one needs to see that Dodge is just playing a numbers game with the 6.4. The L96 obliterated it. I think the 2017 Ford will best the L96 but not to the extreme between the L96 and 6.4. Their test SD sprung a coolant leak on their way to the pass so no result yet.

Of course, nobody runs their trucks the way these guys test them but as a flat out performance/torture test it's very telling.

EDIT: Would love to see a dyno on all three HD gassers to see what's really being put down.

I had to laugh when that 6.2 started blowing coolant, lots of Fords with leaking radiators, seems they have not made a decent one in years.

I will say the 6.2 Ford runs hard, it pulls so much harder then my 6.0's, I drive both every single day. Love hearing the overhead valve Ford rattle every morning on start up, I know they are getting a lot of miles out of them but they sure sound rough on start up.

I nearly ordered a 2017 SD 6.2/4.30 when I bought my 16' because Ford was offering the same discounts on the new truck even though they weren't on the lots yet. I have no issue with the SD. I can make a list of pros and cons between the two but in the end the L96 truck gives me piece of mind that not many vehicles can give me. I have a hard time imagining a scenario where I would be disappointing in buying it. I don't think I'd be disappointed in the SD either but it's a case of go with what you know for me. GM V8's are hard to beat in more ways than one.

I had one. Overall it is only 3 litres per 100km worse than my new 6.0. And pulling my cargo trailer the 6.0 is worse. I would have gladly gotten another 8.1. Wish i hadnt gotten rid of the old one :(

I wonder how the 8.1 vortec would respond in my 1500 2wd ..... I'll take a hit in mpgs compared to my 5.3 buuuuut...... THE POWER!!!!!!! I wonder how bad the mpgs would be out of curiosity. Anyone have those figures by chance..?

6.0 and 8.1 get the same mileage, only difference is the 8.1 has power and gears.

Eh.. Not quite. The 8.1L was definitely a pig on fuel economy. The 6.0 not so much.

I had them both. They run within 1 mile per gallon empty. Pulling a cargo trailer the 6.0 is worse. My 8.1 had 3:73's though.

That's odd, both of mine got 11.5, the 8.1 would pull anything vs the 6.0 that just made noise with a 4L80E that will get hot.

Every 8.1 I've known has got single digits towing and low teens unloaded..and also burned oil new. It was the last of an obsolete generation aka big blocks. My 6.0 is averaging 16-17 unloaded ATM( I drive like I'm 70). Also keep in mind the actual mass of the 8.1 block was like having a couple of old cast iron stoves under the hood also.
